Julia Probst (2012)

Julia Probst (born November 2, 1981 ) is a German blogger and politician (first Pirate Party and then Alliance 90 / The Greens ). She became known nationwide as a deaf lip reader through the 2010 World Cup , when she read words from the lips of footballers and coaches on and on the field under the hashtag #Ableseservice . As an activist , she is committed to inclusion and accessibility, especially for the around 80,000 deaf and 1.6 million hard of hearing in Germany.

Career

Julia Probst, daughter of an Algerian father and a German mother, comes from near Neu-Ulm. She was diagnosed with deafness when she was about a year old. Nevertheless, she attended a primary school for the hearing as a child and grew up speaking loudly, although she had previously attended a deaf kindergarten as a toddler. She only learned sign language at the age of seventeen ; spoken and written German is not a foreign language for her, but her mother tongue .

She became known nationwide with the 2010 Soccer World Cup , when she began reading the lips of soccer players and coaches under the hashtag #Ableseservice . She got the idea when she noticed at the 2006 World Cup that, thanks to lip reading, she often noticed more than her hearing friends. At the EM 2012 , Joachim Löw confessed that he would have to be “a little careful” in the future. At the EM 2016 , the German press agency speculated that their #reading service was attracting so much attention that some players occasionally put their hands to their mouths while speaking. But also at the 2018 World Cup , her tweets were again closely watched by the editorial staff.

Even before Probst signed up for Twitter in June 2010, she started her blog “MeinAugenschmaus” on blogspot in August 2005 with the aim of “removing barriers in people's minds”.

From August 2012, Probst worked as a social media consultant for a Munich-based provider of mobile interpreting services for deaf and hard of hearing people. In addition, she works as a freelance lip reader for television stations such as B. Sky Germany .

In 2015 Probst wrote the screenplay for the Tatort episode " Totenstille ", broadcast in January 2016, together with Peter Probst (who is not related to her) .

The Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Malu Dreyer , appointed Probst to the " State Council for Digital Development and Culture" from October 2016 to mid-2017, which was supposed to help develop digitization in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Since June 2016 she has been a consultant to the board of the Hamburg Association of the Deaf for public relations and the procurement of subsidies.

Political commitment

Pirate party

In July 2012, Probst became a member of the Pirate Party and two months later he was elected third on the Baden-Württemberg state list for the 2013 federal election. If the pirates had exceeded the five percent hurdle in 2013 , which according to surveys in spring 2012 appeared possible, Probst would have become the first deaf MP in the history of the Bundestag . Probst named Barack Obama , who also has basic knowledge of sign language, and Martin Zierold as role models . After an appearance together with Ulf Poschardt and Bruno Kramm in November 2012 in the program log in on ZDFinfo , numerous insults followed on Twitter, such as that Probst should limit himself to sign language or have her statements read out loud. Probst, whose voice the taz described as unusually muffled, scratchy and without modulation for the hearing, initially announced a break. In 2014 she left the Pirate Party again.

Alliance 90 / The Greens

Probst ran unsuccessfully in the local elections in Bavaria on March 15, 2020 for Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Bayern in the Neu-Ulm district as a city council candidate for Weißenhorn .

Other engagement

Probst advocates inclusion instead of integration of deaf people and advocates, for example, that the roles of disabled people in film and television should generally only be filled with disabled people. The frequent practice of filling such roles with non-disabled actors is what she sees as modern blackfacing . In its commitment to accessibility , it advocates increased use of sign language interpreters , support announcements in trains by treadmills , introduction of an SMS - emergency call in Germany (. Such as Austria already open) and an increased offering high quality of subtitles in film and television on.

In 2013 Probst was one of the initiators of a petition intended to ensure that the achievements of people with disabilities were recognized at the New Year's address. She was committed to keeping sign language interpreters in the Phoenix program and during protests against the blood donation service at Essen University Hospital when it refused to accept blood donations from the deaf. Probst advocates giving the deaf general access to mainstream schools and abolishing the special school system . The separation of non-disabled people and people with disabilities from an early age, for which Probst uses the catchphrase "Disabled Apartheid ", results in an attitude of non-disabled people according to the motto: "We know better than you what you need."

Probst is critical of cochlear implants : while the later deaf benefit from this, she believes that many parents should better learn sign language themselves instead of providing their children with cochlea . She recommends that they learn to understand that their child has its own culture, the deaf culture . Probst takes the position: "Deafness is not something that needs to be corrected." Probst had a cochlear implant herself at times, but took it off because she felt that she was doing very well with her lip reading skills and communication. Instead, she advocates enabling general, barrier-free participation in society. Just as ramps for wheelchair users make things easier for strollers, subtitles would not only help the hard of hearing, but also people who want to learn a foreign language.

Awards

  • Twitter boss Jack Dorsey , who had already invited her to dinner at the Munich Seehaus , put a tweet from Probst on a list of the world's top ten tweets of 2011 published by ABC News .
  • In 2011 Julia Probst was named Germany's “Blogger of the Year”.
  • In the blog girls team Probst was elected "blogger girl of the year 2011".
  • In 2013 her blog was nominated for The BOBs .
