Julius von Hochenegg

Julius von Hochenegg (born August 2, 1859 in Vienna ; † May 11, 1940 there ) was an Austrian medic.

Hochenegg studied in Vienna and completed his medical studies with a doctorate in 1884, in 1889 he became a lecturer in surgery , in 1891 head of department at the General Polyclinic, in 1894 professor of surgery at the University of Vienna and in 1904 head of the II surgical clinic there.

Julius Hochenegg was raised to the nobility on November 12, 1914 by Emperor Franz Josef. He improved cancer surgery, set up an X-ray institute and in 1909, together with Anton Eiselsberg, founded the world's first accident wards at the First and Second University Clinics for Surgery in the Vienna General Hospital . With the doctors Anton Eiselsberg, Richard Paltauf , Alexander Fraenkel, Ludwig Teleky and Josef Winter, he founded the k & k Austrian Society for Research and Combat of Cancer , the forerunner organization of the Austrian Cancer Aid, on December 20, 1910 .

Julius Hochenegg was elected honorary member of the Society of Doctors in Vienna on November 12, 1937 .

He was buried at the Grinzing cemetery .

In 1960, the Hocheneggasse in Vienna- Döbling (19th district) was named after him and his brother Carl (spelling from 1960 - the street name was not adapted to the new spelling, after which it should be called Hochenegggasse ).

family

Julius Hochenegg came from a Tyrolean family. His parents were court attorney Johann Baptist Hochenegg (1814–1899) and his wife Cäcilie von Winiwarter (1831–1862). Professor Carl Hochenegg (1860–1942) was his brother and the lawyer and university professor Joseph von Winiwarter was his grandfather.

Julius Hochenegg married Julie Mauthner von Mauthstein (1863–1942), the daughter of the lawyer Wilhelm Mauthner von Mauthstein, in Vienna in 1890 . His son died as a soldier, his daughter Johanna married the professor of surgery Fritz Kaspar (1885–1943),
