Klemen Pretnar (born August 31, 1986 in Bled , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Slovenian ice hockey player who has been under contract with HC Košice in the Slovakian extra league since June 2018 .
Career
Started in Bled and moved to Kranj
Klemen Pretnar learned to play ice hockey in his hometown of Bled, where he still lives today. There he played for the youth club HK MK Bled as well as for the (semi-) professional team of HK Sportina Bled. After the 2002/03 season, HK Bled stopped playing and Pretnar continued to play for his youth club before moving to HK Triglav Kranj . For this he was active in the U20 junior league, the Slovenian ice hockey league and the Interliga in the following years . In doing so, he continuously increased his points and developed into an offensive defender who impressed above all with his passing game. During the 2008/09 season, HK Jesenice became aware of Pretnar and hired him for his farm team, the HD mladi Jesenice .
Success in Jesenice
From 2009 he was a permanent member of the professional team of HK Jesenice and won the Slovenian championship with it in 2010 and 2011 , after the club had participated in the regular season in the Austrian ice hockey league . Pretnar also mastered the leap into this professional league with success - while there were still 4 scorer points in the 2009/10 season, he already scored 15 points in the following season.
Time in Austria
In the 2011/12 season he was one of the team's top performers. During the 2011/12 season, HK Jesenice faced considerable financial difficulties and stopped playing after the end of the season. Therefore, Pretnar was initially without a club. In 2012, shortly before the start of the season, Pretnar was invited to a try-out by Villacher SV , in which this head coach, Hannu Järvenpää, impressed with his style of play and speed. During the season, his contract was prematurely extended for two years.
After three years in Villach, Pretnar changed for the 2015/16 season within the ÖEHL to the 2015 runner-up, the Vienna Capitals .
From May 2016 Pretnar was under contract with HK Junost Minsk in the Belarusian extra league and reached the Belarusian runner-up with this in 2017. In January 2018 he left Minsk and moved to Slovakia to HC 05 Banská Bystrica , with whom he won the Slovak championship at the end of the season. After this success he left HC 05 and moved within the Slovak elite league to HC Košice .
International
Klemen Pretnar was a member of the Slovenian junior national team from the early 2000s. In 2004 he took part in the U18 World Junior Championship of Division I with the country's U18 team. He had other assignments in the youth field at the U20 World Championships in Division I in 2005 and 2006 .
In the men's area, Pretnar was part of the extended national squad from 2009 and completed his first major tournament at the World Cup in Division I in 2010 . In this, the promotion to the top division succeeded with first place. A year later, at the 2011 World Cup , the Slovenes had to accept relegation. In 2012 Pretnar did not take part in the World Cup, but was appointed to the squad for the 2013 Olympic qualification . In this qualifying tournament in February 2013, the Slovenes defeated Belarus, Denmark and the Ukraine and thus qualified for the 2014 Winter Olympics. He then played in the top division at the 2013 World Cup .
On January 6, 2014 Pretnar was nominated for the Olympic squad of the Slovenian men's national team for the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi . There he surprisingly finished seventh with the Slovenes. He also played with his team in the top division at the 2015 World Cup . After relegation there, he joined Division I in 2016 , where he was immediately promoted again.
