Łańcut is a city in Poland in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship .

history

Market square in Łańcut

In 1344 or 1345, King Casimir III took over. the Great († 1370) the western edge of Red Ruthenia ( Sanoker and Przemyśler Land ). Around 1349 the king gave the area to the knight of German origin Otto von Pilcza , who founded the city of Łańcut and several neighboring villages, including with the help of German settlers. The result was a well-documented and researched language island of the so-called forest Germans, although the German language in the city disappeared much earlier than in some neighboring villages. The name of the city, first mentioned in 1369 as Landshut , was most likely transferred from Landeshut ( Kamienna Góra ) in Lower Silesia by the settlers.

Łańcut Castle

The next document that reports on the place Łańcut is a bull from Pope Gregory XI. on January 28, 1378. In 1502, 1523 and 1626 the city was attacked by the Tatars . The castle was built between 1629 and 1642 . From 1889 to 1911 it was extensively restored and rebuilt. In 1820 a great fire raged and destroyed large parts of Łańcut.

Population development

In 1910 there were 4857 inhabitants. In 2007, 18,105 people lived in Łańcut.
