Last Man Standing is an American sitcom starring Tim Allen and Nancy Travis and conceived by Jack Burditt . It has been produced by 20th Century Fox Television for the US broadcaster ABC since 2011 . The focus is on the father of three Mike Baxter, who has to assert himself as a man in his female household. In the USA, the series started on October 11, 2011 with a double episode on ABC; the German-language first broadcast took place almost exactly two years later, on October 10, 2013, on ProSieben Maxx . The series takes place in the same series universe as the Comedy Cristela .

In May 2017, ABC announced the end of the series after six seasons. Tim Allen announced a new season for fall 2018 on the channel "Fox" in May 2018, which started on September 28, 2018.

action

Mike Baxter, father of three, is the marketing director of a branch of a well-known department store chain for sporting goods, hunting and outdoor supplies in Denver , Colorado . He has a strictly conservative and republican worldview and lives with his wife Vanessa and his three daughters Kristin, Mandy and Eve in a large house. The 22-year-old Kristin is a single mother of her son Boyd, initially lives at home, but moves into her own apartment with her son over the course of the series. With her liberal views, she forms the opposite pole to her conservative father. The 17-year-old Mandy is primarily interested in fashion and celebrities, less in her academic achievements, but finds her way to make a career in the course of the series. 14-year-old Eve is in many ways similar to her father and shares many interests with him, but she is slowly beginning to become interested in boys too. Mike's wife Vanessa returned to work after a long time, as a geologist for the energy industry, and quickly became very successful there. This forces Mike to devote more time to parenting at home.

main characters

Mike Baxter

Michael "Mike" Baxter is the main character in the series. He is the marketing director and the figurehead of Outdoor Man. Having just returned from Alaska, he now faces a difficult decision. His wife has received a promotion so he has to choose between traveling and home with the family. He was at the University of Michigan and is a fan of the Denver Broncos .

Vanessa Baxter

Vanessa is Mike's wife and works as a geologist. She mostly tolerates Mike's behavior, also because she knows that he can't hide anything from her. She sees a lot of things like her husband, but she does not allow him to influence her, such as her political views. She graduated from Ohio State University .

Kristin Baxter

Kristin is Mike and Vanessa's oldest daughter. In contrast to her father, she represents liberal convictions. During her senior year of high school , she became pregnant with her son Boyd. She still lives with her parents with her son and works as a waitress in a restaurant.

Mandy Baxter

Amanda Elaine "Mandy" Baxter is the middle daughter. In contrast to her sisters, she is not the “school type”, but knows more about fashion. She would later like to appear in a television series like her role models (e.g. Kim Kardashian ).

Eve Baxter

Eve is the youngest of the three Baxter daughters and is most similar to her father, which is also increasingly emphasized in the series. She has similar interests to him (e.g. camping, sports and guns), but during the first season she starts to be more interested in boys. She also got her sense of humor from her father, which she usually lets out in the form of sarcastic sayings on her sister Mandy.

Kyle Anderson

Kyle is the youngest employee at Outdoor Man. Mike tries to get him together with his daughter Mandy first. But since he confuses Mandy with Kristin, he starts a relationship with her instead. Although Mike is often annoyed by him, he has sympathy for Kyle.

Ed Alzate

Edward "Ed" Alzate is the owner of Outdoor Man and Mike's boss. Even though he's older than Mike, the two of them share a lot of things like their hobbies and worldview. Ed is from the Basque Country and served during the Vietnam War. He too has sympathies for Kyle, who, like him, also comes from the Basque Country.

Boyd Baxter

Son of Kristin and Ryan. Mike enjoys spending time with his grandson Boyd and lovingly regards him as the son he never had. Mike and Ryan often argue about how he should be raised.

Ryan Vogelson

Boyd's Canadian father. When Kristin got pregnant he went back to Canada, but returns later to participate in Boyd's upbringing. This leads to the fact that the two reconciled and later got engaged. Ryan is politically and philosophically liberal. He and Mike regularly argue over their fundamentally conflicting values. Especially when it comes to raising Boyd's children. Ryan wants to raise his son without religion, hunting and nationalism. Mike's vegan diet and rejection of religion are frequent reasons for scorn and ridicule . On rare occasions, Ryan and Mike agree, but this usually brings them into conflict with Kristin or Vanessa. After the death of Bud Baxter (Mike's father), Ryan takes over his marijuana shop.

Chuck Larabee

Mike and Vanessa's neighbor. Chuck is a retired U.S. Marine and a Gulf War veteran. He runs a private security company that is later also responsible for the security of Outdoor Man. Chuck is African American and often jokes with Mike about racial stereotypes . They both exchange mean sayings as if they don't like each other. In reality, they are good friends even though they refuse to admit it. Chuck is married to Carol and has a son, Brandon, who is Eve's age.

Jen

Vanessa's exchange student from Hong Kong , who is moving into the 7th season with the Baxters. At first she is shy and does whatever Mike wants. But Mike urges them to be more confident and stand up for themselves.

Switzerland

In Switzerland, the first season of the series was broadcast for the first time from March 10 to July 22, 2014 and the second season from November 18 to December 17, 2015 on SRF Zwei. SRF Zwei broadcasts the series in two-channel sound in the German dubbed version and with the original English sound.

Channel change

On May 10, 2017, ABC announced that Last Man Standing had been discontinued after six seasons, despite the series having solid audience ratings. The hiatus sparked protests from fans of the series, who let their anger run wild on social networks. The hiring came after the main actor had compared the "Liberals" in Hollywood with the Nazis in Germany during the Third Reich . This comparison, which has been criticized, has been viewed by some commentators as one of the reasons for the series' discontinuation.

Tim Allen tweeted his disappointment with the hiring on May 16.

On May 20, 2017, Howard Kurtzman, president of 20th Century Fox Television said there was some interest in continuing the show. The seventh season then started on September 28, 2018.

Trivia

  • The outdoor man shop shown in the series is actually a store of the Bass Pro Shops chain . The branch in Rancho Cucamonga , California was used for the outdoor shots , and indoor shots were also made there for individual film sequences.
  • In the series there are numerous allusions to the series Listen, who hammers there , in which Tim Allen also played the lead role. Mike Baxter is asked more often, especially in the first episodes, whether he is sure that he has three daughters and not three sons (like in Listen, Who's That Hammering ). When Mike Baxter meets the (guest) role of Richard Karn (Al Borland), they both wonder how they have known each other for so long. After all, Jonathan Taylor Thomas (Randy Taylor) even makes a few appearances in Last Man Standing as the new boss of Mike's daughter Kristin. The men meet in the Baxter's house and there are also various allusions to where the two of them know each other. When Thomas talks about his car, he mentions that he has equipped it with "more power" - a well-known slogan from Listen to Who's Hammering . Patricia Richardson (Jill Taylor) asks in her guest appearance as Helen Potts if Mike can handle tools. In another episode, the current wife Vanessa replies to Helen (Richardson) that it would be as if they had both married the same man.
  • A blue tool case from "Binford-Tools" can be seen in various episodes; this is an allusion to the fictional company "Binford-Tools" from Listen who's hammering there .
  • Tim Allen's role in the 3 Santa Clause films is also referred to. Mike Baxter answers in the episode "From man to man" when asked if he wants to play Santa Claus that nobody would do it for him anyway. In episode 5x5 Jay Leno refers to the fact that it felt like 6 Claus films and Mike replied that there were only 3.
  • In the third episode, "The Fake Skeleton", he points out a child on the street about a mistake in his Buzz Lightyear costume. (He originally speaks the Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story film series.)
  • In season 5, episode 11, Eve says to her father in the original "Easy, wildhog." In reference to Tim Allen's role in the film Born to be Wild .
