Leninsk-Kusnezki ( Russian Ле́нинск-Кузне́цкий , until 1922 Kolchugino / Кольчу́гино , 1922–1925 Lenino / Ле́нино ) is a city in the west of the Russian Kemerovo Oblast in Siberia . It has 101,666 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and is located around 90 km south of Kemerovo on the right bank of the Inja , a tributary of the Ob.

history

The settlement was founded as Kolchugino in 1763 and has had city rights since 1925. Coal mining was started in 1912 by a French company.

From 1922 to 1925 the place was called Lenino in honor of the revolutionary leader Lenin . His current name, also reminiscent of Lenin, and the addition "Kuznetsky", based on the location in the Kuznetsk Basin , he received together with the award of city rights in 1925.

Large parts of the city were laid out by the German architect and urban planner Ernst May .

In the 1980s, the nearby urban-type Polyssajewo settlement , which had been under the administration of Leninsk-Kuznetsky since 1952, was incorporated, increasing the city's population by around 30,000. Polyssayevo was spun off again on October 30, 1989, now with an independent town charter.
