Gong Lijiao ( Chinese  鞏 立 姣  /  巩 立 姣 , Pinyin Gǒng Lìjiāo ; born January 24, 1989 in Luquan , Shijiazhuang ) is a Chinese shot putter .

Athletic career

Gong Lijiao gained her first international experience at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka , where she was seventh with 18.66 m. In 2008 she won the gold medal at the Asian Indoor Championships in Doha with 18.12 m and thus her first international title. During the outdoor season she qualified for the first time for the Olympic Games in Beijing , where she originally finished fifth with 19.20 m in the final . Since 2017 she has been listed as a bronze medal winner because of the doping offenses of the Belarusian athletes Natallja Michnewitsch and Nadseja Astaptschuk , who were placed before her . At the World Championships in Berlin the following year , she won the bronze medal with 19.89 m. In November of the same year she also won the Asian Championships in her native Guangzhou with 19.04 m ahead of her compatriot Liu Xiangrong and Iranian Leila Rajabi .

In 2010, Gong came eighth at the World Indoor Championships in Doha and moved up to sixth after the doping disqualifications of the Belarusians mentioned above. At the Asian Games in Guangzhou she won the silver medal with 19.67 m and only had to admit defeat to her compatriot Li Ling . Before that, she also came second at the Continental Cup in Split , but only moved up to it later. In 2011 she again took part in the World Championships in Daegu , South Korea , where she originally finished fourth with 19.97 m. However, this time too, the Belarusian Astaptschuk was in front of her, who was later stripped of her silver medal and Gong moved up to the bronze rank. In 2012 she took part again in the Olympic Games in London , where she initially took fourth place with 20.22 m, but moved up a week after the disqualification of the Belarusian Olympic champion Nadseja Astaptschuk and received the bronze medal. Since the Russian Jewgenija Kolodko also lost her subsequently awarded silver medal from 2012 because of doping in August 2016 , the Chinese came in second place in the end.

In 2013 she won her third bronze medal at the World Championships in Moscow with 19.95 m behind Valerie Adams and Christina Schwanitz from Germany. In March 2014 she took part in the indoor world championships in Sopot , Poland , where she won the bronze medal with 19.24 m. At the beginning of September she also reached third place at the Continental Cup in Marrakech and shortly afterwards won the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea with 19.06 m. At the 2015 World Championships, in the absence of Valerie Adams, she won the silver medal behind Christina Schwanitz with 20.30 m in the final . After finishing fourth at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro with 19.39 m and missing a medal, she won the gold medal at the 2017 World Championships in London with 19.94 m in the final ahead of Anita Márton from Hungary and the American Michelle Carter .

In 2018 she took part again in the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham , where she won the bronze medal with 19.08 m, just like four years earlier. At the end of August she took part in the Asian Games in the Indonesian capital Jakarta for the third time and won there with 19.66 m ahead of her compatriot Liu Tingting and the Bahraini Noora Salem Jasim . Also at the Asian Championships in Doha 2019 she won with 19.18 m superior to Jasim and secured her second continental title and thus received a bye for the World Championships there , for which she was already set as the defending champion. At the World Championships, she secured the gold medal with a width of 19.55 m in the final and successfully defended her title.

Between 2007 and 2010 as well as 2012, 2014 and from 2017 to 2019, Gong became the Chinese champion in outdoor shot put and in 2011 and 2019 indoors.
