Palais Spee, Spee'scher Graben and Park | Bäckerstrasse 7-9 map |
Due to its historical importance as well as its importance for the city plan, the former palace of the Counts Spee with park, the upstream water areas and their horticultural edging was entered in the list of monuments of the city of Düsseldorf. The representative buildings in the former fortress area with the remains of the bastion illustrate the city limits in the 17th century. With the building and its partially preserved furnishings, the city has a remarkable example of the city palace type. The core of the oldest eastern part of the Palais Spee dates from the time of Jan Wellem . The court treasurer Adam von Diemantstein († 1730 in Düsseldorf) bought a previous building in 1703 and several adjacent properties and built a stately home here, the architect of which was probably Michael Cagnon . In the following centuries the house changed hands several times and for a long time was owned by the von Spee family . In 1806 Carl-Wilhelm von Spee bought the palace on the southeastern bastion of the citadel in Düsseldorf-Carlstadt. The two-storey four-wing complex (extension to the four-wing complex at the beginning of the 19th century) made of brick masonry has grown together from several houses. In the Second World War in 1943/1945, the property was badly damaged and then rebuilt, partially modified. Originally the building was plastered. In 1963 the city of Düsseldorf bought it and the City History Museum moved in (1st construction phase). In 1977 the west wing in Palais Spee (2nd construction phase) was expanded and in 1980 it was renamed the city museum . In 1991 the city museum was reopened after completion of the extension by Niklaus Fritschi (3rd construction phase). The entrance to the Stadtmuseum in Palais Spee is at Berger Allee 2. Behind the Stadtmuseum Düsseldorf is the Spee'sche Park, which was laid out by Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe at the beginning of the 19th century. Benches, shady trees and a small rose garden invite you to linger. Some sculptures have been placed in the lovely garden. The small park is open every day; access is via a wrought-iron gate on Bäckerstraße. | 17th century, 18th century | May 9, 1984 |

Max school | Citadellstrasse 2b | The school itself was founded in 1695 by the Franciscans of the adjacent monastery as a lay school. In the course of secularization, a boys 'and girls' school was set up here from 1804, which Heinrich Heine , then still Harry Heine, attended from 1804 to 1807. In 1854 the new building, which still exists today, was built according to plans by Anton Schnitzler and completed in 1855/1856, in which, in addition to functionality, special emphasis was placed on a beautiful facade. | 1855-1856 | Dec. 1, 1983 |

Residential building with shop | Hafenstrasse 1 | The three-storey, plastered corner house next to the “zum Schiffchen” brewery was built at the end of the 18th century. The foundation walls, on the site of an original watermill, are, however, much older than the baroque building built above. From 1878 to 1880 the house was modernized. Around 1900 the house was rebuilt and new shop windows were installed. Placed under monument protection, the house was modernized in 1986. | End of 18th century | 5th Mar 1984 |
