List of nature reserves of East Timor
This list includes the nature reserves of East Timor .
historical development
In 1983, three nature reserves were created under the Indonesian administration.
In 2000 UNTAET founded 15 protected natural areas (PNA ). You are also protected by independent East Timor law. Both at sea and on land, they are intended to protect landscapes, rare species and cultural values. This includes corals, wetlands and mangroves as well as places of historical, cultural and artistic importance. The three original reserves were also added to the list. On July 27, 2007, the country's first national park was established, the Nino Konis Santana National Park . On October 20, 2015, the Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão National Park was added.
In addition, BirdLife International has identified 17 Important Bird Areas , but they are not protected by law. Together they have an area of 2013 km², which corresponds to 13.4% of the land area of East Timor.
The management of the nature reserves is the responsibility of the East Timorese Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries .
