List of the largest cities in Rhineland-Palatinate
This list names the cities and municipalities in Rhineland-Palatinate with more than 15,000 inhabitants. The number of inhabitants is based on the official update of the State Statistical Office of Rhineland-Palatinate as of December 31, 2019.
The municipal status as well as the district and regional affiliation are indicated for each city . These are all independent cities and all cities belonging to the large district as well as several cities belonging to the district which, with their population below 25,000, do not count as cities belonging to the large district. In contrast, the cities of Mayen and Lahnstein are classified as large district cities despite their smaller population, as they were granted this status in the course of the regional reforms in the 1970s.
The planning regions were used for the geographical classification within the state , as many cities in Rhineland-Palatinate cannot be clearly assigned to a historical region due to their changing history and there are no longer any administrative districts .
