List of Swedish field marshals
The time of the Swedish field marshals began with the rise of the Swedish Empire under King Erik XIV. Many names are known in Germany from the time of the Thirty Years' War (Knyphausen, Baner, Torstenson, etc.). With the loss of the Baltic provinces ( Livonia ) and the German provinces ( Pomerania ), the office of field marshal lost its importance, so that it ceased to exist in the 19th century.
