Differentiation of court titles

With the unification of the German states to form the German Empire on January 18, 1871, the royal Prussian purveyors to the court by no means became imperial purveyors at the same time. Rather, there was a great difference between the court titles of the individual majesties with the seat in Prussia. From 1871 onwards there were different titles:

  • Purveyor to the Court of His Majesty the King or Purveyor to Her Majesty the Queen
  • Purveyor to the court of the emperor and king or purveyor to the court of the empress and queen
  • Purveyor to the Crown Prince
  • Purveyor to the Prince's Court
  • as well as combinations such as purveyor to the court of the emperor and king, the crown prince and the prince

Abbreviations such as royal purveyor to the court or just purveyor to the court without any additional additions were permitted and in use. The designations Imperial Court Supplier or Imperial and Royal Court Supplier were not permitted .

The honorees may not have the general title of purveyor to the court , but rather a job-related title such as court jeweler, court shoemaker, court furrier or court photographer .

Validity of the court awards

Awarded court awards were not valid for the respective company, but were only awarded to or only approved for persons. They therefore automatically expire with the death of the borrowed. They also expire as soon as the borrowed party went bankrupt or was no longer the owner or co-owner of the business. Furthermore, it was also possible to withdraw the rating or the granted approval. The court titles awarded were allowed to continue after the lender's death.

Use of the coat of arms

Court titles gave the entrusted the authority to designate his business with the coat of arms of the lender. However, only on business signs, labels, bills, advertisements and the like. The coat of arms was forbidden on seals, stamps and seals.

The purveyors to the court of His Majesty the Emperor and King were not allowed to wear the imperial coat of arms, they were only allowed to wear the Royal Prussian coat of arms. The royal purveyors, on the other hand, were only entitled to the medium or small coat of arms and the royal purveyors to the court only the small coat of arms. However, this was not always observed and these provisions were often ignored.
