Luis Pereyra (born July 9, 1965 in the province of Santiago del Estero ) is an Argentine dancer and choreographer of Tango Argentino and Argentine folklore .

Life and accomplishments

Luis Pereyra comes from a simple working-class family. At the age of 5 he danced in folklore groups. At the age of 11 he made his first professional appearance as a member of the Argentino Ballet under the direction of Mario Machaco and Norma Ré. He had his first stage appearance in the legendary Caño 14 , where the famous bandoneonist Aníbal Troilo was performing at the same time . Luis Pereyra later became a member of the ballet Salta by Marina and Hugo Jiménez . Luis Pereyra studied choreography under the direction of Maestro Carusso at the Teatro Colón , the opera house of Buenos Aires , and at the Escuela Nacional de Danzas . He learned from recognized masters such as Santiago Ayala "El Chúcaro", Hugo Jiménez, Mario Machaco , Héctor Zaraspe , Irene Acosta , Ana Marini , Wasil Tupin and Mercedes Serrano . His education includes modern dance , classical ballet , jazz dance , folklore , tap dance and a degree in music.

He took part in all major tango productions, including a. at Forever Tango , Tango Pasión and from 1987 to 2000 in the musical Tango Argentino produced by Claudio Segovia and Héctor Orrezoli . Here Luis Pereyra received the nomination for the Tony Award in 2000. Performances have taken him to the USA , Canada , Great Britain , Germany , Japan , Austria , Switzerland , the Netherlands and France .

In 2001 he took over the solo part in the opera Orestes - Last Tango under the direction of the choreographer Oscar Araiz . This opera was produced for the WMTF Festival Holland . At his side were the dancer Nicole Nau and the singers Julia Zenko, Susana Moncayo and Carlos Víttori.

In the course of his career he has danced at major stages such as the Gershwin Theater on Broadway , the Théâtre du Châtelet , Paris, the Aldwych Theater in the West End (London) , the Cologne Philharmonic , the Alte Oper in Frankfurt am Main and the Deutsches Theater Munich . In 1994 he danced for Paramount Pictures and was presented by Al Pacino . In 1995 he danced at the Castro Theater in San Francisco and shared the stage with Robin Williams and Peter Coyote .

Luis Pereyra's choreographic work is strongly influenced by his Argentine origins. His works are always close to folk dance and pure in the choice of elements. His work is permeated by his principle: “Unity. What belongs together must not be separated. ” He wants to see the culture of Argentina as a unity, the Tango Argentino as part of the Argentine folklore. From the beginning he follows this baseline. Its aim is to unite all the dances of Argentina on stage. Tango, Chacarera , Milonga , Milonga Sureña, Zamba, Gato and Malambo, the dance of the gauchos , to name just a few. Equal rights, with each other and thus creating a picture of the country of Argentina.

Luis Pereyra sees the music as the original force of all dance. Therefore he chooses wisely strong compositions of the original Argentine music and attaches great importance to exploitation by authentic instruments like bandoneon , Cajas , Bombo leguero and others.

Tom Noga wrote on August 19, 2004 in the Frankfurter Rundschau : “El Sonido de mi Tierra is a dance and music revue. A declaration of love to Argentina, its people and landscapes. "

In his productions, Luis Pereyra usually dances himself. His most recent works include Aqui Folklore in 2011 and Viejo Almacén in 2010 as well as all productions by his own company El Sonido de mi Tierra (“The Sound of My Earth”). In 2007 he opened the Café de los Angelitos - El Tango with his production .

Luis Pereyra has been working with his partner Nicole Nau since 2001 under the name Nicole Nau & Luis Pereyra . His company, founded in 1996, was called El Sonido de mi Tierra - The Great Dance of Argentina until 2015 . In 2016 he founded the company El Sonido de mi Tierra - VIDA! ARGENTINO .
