Marsabit County (until 2010 Marsabit District ) is a county in northern Kenya . The capital is Marsabit . In 2019, the county lived 459,785 people on 66,923.1 km². Until 1995, Marsabit County and the Moyale District formed one district. Marsabit County is the second largest county in Kenya after Turkana County and occupies more than 10% of the area of the entire country. To the west, the county borders on Lake Turkana . Marsabit County is divided into the divisions Central, Gadamoji, Laisamis, Maikona, Loiyangalani and North Horr . The 1550 km² Marsabit National Park is located on Mount Marsabit .
The county's climate is arid , with only 10% of the area considered arable. In 2003 45% of the population lived below the poverty line, 90% of the population has no direct access to clean water. More than 80% of the population are unable to read and write.
economy
The people of Marsabit County make a living from raising livestock. Mainly zebus , goats and sheep are bred. In addition to maize, beans and grain are grown on the few arable land , as well as coffee beans , Kath and legumes . Fishing is carried out on Lake Turkana.

The district has the 86-bed Marsabit County Hospital in the capital, Marsabit. More than 20% of the children were underweight in 2003, and 8.6% of the children died before their 5th birthday.
