Matthew McIlvane (born November 2, 1985 in Naperville , Illinois ) is an American ice hockey coach and former player. He has been the head coach of EC Red Bull Salzburg since June 2019 .
Career as a player
McIlvane began his hockey career in 2001 in the US Junior League North American Hockey League with the Chicago Freeze . The center played only two games there in its first season, but was used regularly in the following season and was able to score 56 points in 53 games. Consequently, those responsible for some NHL teams became aware of the left shooter.
During the NHL Entry Draft 2004 it was the Ottawa Senators who selected him in the eighth round in a total of 251st place. After another season in the United States Hockey League with the Chicago Steel McIlvane got a scholarship in the summer of 2004 at Ohio State University , for which he played from then on in the university league Central Collegiate Hockey Association . In his senior season he was captain of the "Buckeyes". At the end of the 2007/08 season , the 1.75 m tall striker moved to the Binghamton Senators , the Ottawa Senators' farm team, for four games in the American Hockey League .
In the summer of 2008 McIlvane decided to move to Europe and completed a few test games for the Eisbären Berlin . In these games he convinced the management of the polar bears, so that he was on the ice for the polar bears in the 2008/09 season . In November 2008 he suffered a cruciate ligament tear in his left knee. After recovering from his injury, McIlvane played in North America between 2009 and 2012 for the Bloomington Prairie Thunders in the American Hockey League and CHL, the AHL club Peoria Rivermen and the Cincinnati Cyclones in the ECHL .
Career as a coach
After a few games for Bloomington PrairieThunder in the 2011/12 season, he ended his career due to injury and was head coach of the Danville Dashers of the Federal Hockey League .
In August 2013, McIlvane became assistant coach at EC Red Bull Salzburg in Austria under Don Jackson and followed him to Germany for EHC Red Bull Munich in June 2014 .
