Melissa is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 3398 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Crotone in Calabria . The municipality is located about 26.5 kilometers north-northwest of Crotone on the Ionian Sea . The north-western border of the municipality forms the Lipuda .

Viticulture

White and red wines are sold under the name Melissa DOC that have had a "controlled designation of origin " (Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC ) since 1979 , which was last updated on March 7, 2014.

The denomination describes the following types of wine:

Melissa Bianco: must consist of at least 80–95% Greco Bianco grapes . A maximum of 5–20% Trebbiano Toscano and / or Malvasia Bianca may be added - individually or together.

Melissa Rosso: must consist of at least 75–95% Gaglioppo grapes . A maximum of 5–25% Greco Nero , Greco Bianco , Trebbiano Toscano and / or Malvasia Bianca may be added - individually or together.

The place is also in the DOC wine-growing region Cirò .

history

Melissa is first mentioned in a document in the 13th century. In 1949 two young men and a young woman were shot dead by the police. The event is known as the Strage di Melissa .

Strada Statale 106 Jonica (also E90 ) runs through the municipality along the coastline.

Melissa has two intra-Italian partnerships with the municipalities of Gattatico in the province of Reggio Emilia and Pedesina in the province of Sondrio .
