Steenokkerzeel is a municipality in the northwestern part of Dijleland in the province of Flemish Brabant in the Kingdom of Belgium . This municipality in Flanders has 12,135 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and is located on the northeastern edge of the greater Brussels area. It consists of the main town and the two districts Melsbroek and Perk .

Steenokkerzeel became known to a certain extent as the residence of the last Austrian Empress Zita von Bourbon-Parma , who lived here in exile with her family (including Otto von Habsburg ) from 1929 until the beginning of the Second World War .

The city center of Brussels is about 12 kilometers southwest, Leuven 13 km east and Mechelen 13 km north.

The next motorway exits are at Sterrebeek on the A 3 / E 40 and at Machelen and Vilvoorde on the Brussels motorway ring.

In Kortenberg , Nossegem are the next and Vilvoorde regional stations .

Brussels National Airport, located in the immediate vicinity of the municipality, is an airport of international importance.
