Merseyrail is a S-Bahn- like railway network that connects Liverpool with Birkenhead and other suburbs. It was created in the 1970s when various existing suburban railways were electrified and linked with two newly built tunnels under the center of Liverpool. The system uses busbars on the side, painted from above, which are fed with a direct voltage of 750 volts.
Lines
Merseyrail consists of two branching lines, Northern Line and Wirral Line , with a total length of 120 km and 67 stations. A third line, called Merseytravel City Line by the transport association , is not operated by Merseyrail, but by Northern Rail and London Midland . Around 100,000 passengers use the Merseyrail network Monday through Friday.
Northern Line
The Northern Line runs parallel to the River Mersey in a north-south direction and connects Liverpool with Kirkby , Ormskirk and Southport . The trains start in the south of Liverpool at Hunts Cross station and are tied through to Southport. The other two northern branches, after Kirkby and Ormskirk, are used at Liverpool Central Station . The connections are operated every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes in the evenings and on Sundays. During rush hour and on Sundays in the summer months, additional repeater trains are used on the Liverpool Central and Southport route. You can change to the Wirral Line at the two underground stations Liverpool Central and Moorfields. For soccer games in the Goodison Park and Anfield stadiums , a special bus service is used from the Sandhills station. From Liverpool South Parkway station there is a connection to the City Line and bus services to Liverpool John Lennon Airport .
Wirral Line
The Wirral Line connects central Liverpool with destinations on the other side of the Mersey: Birkenhead , New Brighton , West Kirby , Chester and Ellesmere Port . The branches on the Wirral Peninsula are brought together in the Hamilton Square train station in Birkenhead and then cross under Liverpool city center in a clockwise loop. In addition to the transfer options to the Northern Line, there is also a station at Liverpool Lime Street train station , from which the City Line trains also depart. In addition to Chester, which offers connections to long-distance traffic, there are two stations with further connection options. There is a connection to Warrington from Ellesmere Port and the Borderlands Line to Wrexham departs from Bidston . On weekdays, the connections are operated every 15 minutes during the day, and usually every 30 minutes in the evenings, on Sundays and public holidays.
operator
The operation has been outsourced to third-party companies since the privatization of the British Railways . It was awarded by the Strategic Rail Authority until 2005, and since then by the regional transport authority Merseytravel ( Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive ). From 1997 to 1999 Merseyside Transport Ltd from the MTL Holdings group acted as operator, after which Arriva Trains Merseyside took over the services.
In 2002 Merseytravel put the operation of the services out to tender again across Europe. Successful bidder was Merseyrail Electrics Ltd, a joint subsidiary of Serco and Abellio (again a subsidiary of Nederlandse Spoorwegen ), which took over the Merseyrail services on July 20, 2003. The concluded transport contract has a term of 25 years.
The network is owned and operated by Network Rail (successor to Railtrack since 2002 ). In 2005, Merseytravel applied to the UK government to transfer the network, but Network Rail refused.
