Middle Schurwald is a protected landscape area (protected area number 1.16.043) in the Esslingen district .

Location and description

The protected area lies on the Schurwald heights between the Neckar Valley and the Remstal . It almost completely encloses the municipality of Baltmannsweiler with its district of Hohengehren and the municipality of Lichtenwald with its district of Thomashardt . The reserve was established on September 30, 1982 with a size of 2090 hectares. By ordinances of August 14, 1997 and December 20, 2000, areas were removed so that it now has a size of 2047.6 hectares.

The LSG belongs to the natural area 107- Schurwald and Welzheimer Wald within the natural spatial main unit 10- Swabian Keuper-Lias-Land .

Protection purpose

According to the Protected Area Ordinance, the main protection purpose is the preservation of the typical virgin forest landscape as an open space and recreation area between Fils and Remstal on the edge of the Stuttgart agglomeration.
