Protection purpose

Due to its favorable location between the state capital Stuttgart and the university city of Tübingen, the largest closed forest area in Württemberg is of particular importance for the recreation of the population, for the climate, for hunting and for field biological research. The richly indented lonely Keup valleys in the interior of the Schönbuch, the change in the composition of the Keuper and Lias rocks, the contrast between plateaus and slopes, tectonic disturbances in the rock layers (Bebenhauser Graben), the great differences in the local climate and the foothills of the forest against the Neckar and Neckar Aichtal cause the diversity of plant and animal life and the wealth of different landscapes. The unique Bebenhausen monastery complex also gives the area an excellent cultural and historical value. The steep drop (Keuperstufe) of the Schönbuch to the Ammertal and the Gäu landscape is also significant in terms of landscape.
