NGC 1487 is a merging spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type Sm in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 31 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 30,000 light-years across . Together with NGC 1510 and NGC 1512 , it forms the small NGC 1512 group .
The object was discovered by James Dunlop on October 29, 1826 .
