NGC 1509 = IC 2026 is a spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 381 million light years from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered by Lewis Swift on October 22, 1886 and rediscovered by Guillaume Bigourdan (IC 2026) on December 16, 1897 . The galaxy was likely first observed by Ormond Stone before October 12, 1886 .
