NGC 1531 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E / S0? pec in the constellation Eridanus in the southern sky . It is around 55 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 20,000 light years .
The galaxy is in interactive contact with the much larger spiral galaxy NGC 1532 , which can be seen very nicely in the deformations and starburst regions of the spiral.

The galaxy NGC 1531 was discovered on October 19, 1835 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
