NGC 1549 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E0-1 in the constellation swordfish on the southern sky . It is estimated to be 48 million light years from the Milky Way and about 75,000 light years in diameter. Together with NGC 1553 , which is around 175,000 light years away , it forms an interacting galaxy pair and is a member of the NGC 1553 group ( LGG 112 ). In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 1546 and IC 2058 .
The object was discovered on November 5, 1826 by the Scottish astronomer James Dunlop .
