NGC 1559 is a bar-spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Reticulum in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 50 million light years from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter.

Current observations have shown that the galaxy is neither part of a galaxy cluster nor a group of galaxies and that it has no closer companion galaxies. NGC 1559 has massive spiral arms and shows strong star formation , the galaxy is also a source of very strong radio emissions .

In 2005 a type Ia SN 2005df supernova took place. Two other supernovae observed in NGC 1559 were SN 1984J (Type-II) and SN 1986L (Type-IIP). All three were discovered by the Australian amateur astronomer Robert Evans. In 2009 the type IIP supernova SN 2009ib was observed here.

The object was discovered by James Dunlop on December 9, 1826 .
