Nogometno Društvo Gorica is a Slovenian football club from the border town of Nova Gorica . The association is also called HIT Gorica because of its main sponsor . Along with NK Maribor and NK Olimpija Ljubljana, ND Gorica is one of the most successful clubs in the country and has played in the highest Slovenian league since the league was founded .
history
The club was founded as a Slovenian football club in October 1947 when the city of Gorizia was divided between Italy and Slovenia under the Peace of Paris .
ND Gorica was one of the 21 founding members of the 1st SNL in 1991 and has been playing first class ever since. In the all-time table, the team is second behind Maribor (as of 2015). 1996 achieved the first championship title in the club's history when the previous series champion NK Olimpija Ljubljana could be left behind. This made it possible to participate in an international competition for the first time, but Vardar Skopje proved too strong in both games and won 1-0 and 2-1.
In the following season they were able to qualify as third for the UEFA Cup , in which they only failed in the second round at Club Bruges this time . In the following years, too, top places were achieved, which time and again meant qualification for the international competitions. However, it wasn't until 2001 that the next title was won when the club prevailed in the two cup final games against Olimpija Ljubljana. After a 0-1 defeat in the first leg, a 4-2 win was achieved in the second leg. In the following year the title could be defended, Aluminij Kidricevo lost both games 0: 4 and 1: 2 respectively.
From 2004 to 2006 ND Gorica won the national championship. In 2005 they narrowly missed the double when they lost the cup final with an own goal by Vladislav Lungu against NK Celje 1-0. In 2019, the ND Gorica team will be relegated from the 1st SNL for the first time since 1991. In the following second division season, the team finished second and thus qualified for the relegation. They played against the penultimate from the 1st SNL, the NK Triglav . After both games, Gorica won 6-1 and thus managed to return to the top division of Slovenia.
