The NXT Cruiserweight Championship is the cruiserweight wrestling title of the US promotion WWE , which is awarded exclusively to male individual wrestlers with a maximum weight of 93 kg (205 lbs ). The title was introduced on September 14, 2016 at the Cruiserweight Classic . The current title holder in his first reign is Jordan Devlin. As is common in wrestling, the award is based on a previously determined storyline .

history

The Cruiserweight Classic was a 32-man WWE tournament that aired on the WWE Network between June 23 and September 14, 2016 . The final of the Cruiserweight Classic took place on September 14, 2016 between the American T. J. Perkins and the Mexican Gran Metalik. Before the finals began, WWE Chief Operating Officer Triple H stated that the tournament winner would also be the champion of the Cruiserweight Division reintroduced with the return of the Brand Extension . As with other titles that have been introduced since 2016, the new championship does not have the lineage of the predecessor title ( Cruiserweight Championship ) , which was fought between 1996 and 2001 in the WCW and between 2001 and 2007 in the WWE . The final, and thus the first Cruiserweight Classic as well as the WWE Cruiserweight Championship, was won by Perkins after just 18 minutes by giving up Metalik.

Originally the championship was defended exclusively on Raw . On November 29, 2016, the premiere of the cruiserweight show 205 Live took place on the WWE Network. The championship was defended on Raw and 205 Live after the show launched . On January 23, 2018, then-title holder Enzo Amore was fired from the WWE and the championship was declared vacant. Triple H then took creative control of 205 Live and began restructuring the show. In the 205 Live episode on January 30th, a 16-man singles elimination tournament was announced to crown a new titleholder. The final of the tournament took place at WrestleMania 34 between Cedric Alexander and Mustafa Ali, where Alexander defeated Ali to win the vacant championship. According to WrestleMania 34 , the master's eight was exclusively defended at 205 Live .

Just before NXT moved to the USA Network in September 2019 , Triple H announced that 205 Live was becoming part of NXT to create more opportunities for cruiserweight wrestlers. The following month the title was renamed the NXT Cruiserweight Championship . On January 25, 2020 at Worlds Collide , Triple H and NXT General Manager William Regal presented the then title holder Angel Garza with a new title belt. The redesigned design is largely the same. The WWE logo on the center panel has been replaced with a vertical NXT logo and the purple belt is now dark purple.
