The N 2 is the longest of the national roads in Senegal . The Cairo-Dakar Highway follows its western part in Senegal.

The course of the road begins as a junction from the N 1 east of the Diamniadio through- town . In this city, all of the country's traffic routes are bundled on the way to the major cities of the Dakar metropolitan region on the Cap-Vert peninsula . The end of the N2 is in the east in Kidira on the border with Mali , where it again joins the N1 and the route until then is 834 kilometers long.

The road connects the north and east of the country with the metropolitan region of Dakar in a large arc , initially following the Grande-Côte at some distance and then following the left bank of Senegal . It leads through the regions (from west to east) Thiès , Louga , Saint-Louis , Matam and Tambacounda .

In the city of Thiès , the N2 originally ran through the city center around Place de France . The bypass road called Voie de contournement Nord is now more time-saving .

The N2 usually leads over the savanna-like, dry high bank terrace away from the fertile and relatively densely populated Senegal lowlands, because this is criss-crossed by impassable wetlands and watercourses. Therefore, some important cities in the river region are not on their route. Namely to the department prefecture of Podor , which is located on the island of Morfil , only a side road branches off.

In two places the N2 is supplemented by branch lines towards the river bank. A little west of Richard Toll , the 5.9 kilometer long N2B leads to Rosso (Senegal) to the Rosso ferry via Senegal and thus establishes the connection to the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott on the Mauritanian N2 as part of the Cairo-Dakar highway . The second branch line is the N2C, which mainly serves the Bakel prefecture, which is 5.5 kilometers off the N2 on the river bank.
