Northern , the brand name of Arriva Rail North , was the primary train operator in Northern England. The subsidiary of Arriva UK Trains took over the operation of the Northern franchise from Northern Rail on April 1, 2016 . On January 29, 2020, it was announced that at the end of February 29, 2020, Arriva Rail North would be withdrawn from the franchise due to below-average operating quality. The operation is to be temporarily continued by the state railway company Northern Trains .

Northern operated more stations than any other rail operating company in the UK.

Route network

Arriva Rail North operated a dense network of numerous regional connections in northern England , ranging from Carlisle and Newcastle upon Tyne in the north to Stoke-on-Trent and Nottingham in the south and several hundred smaller stations to the large cities of Liverpool , Manchester , Leeds , Bradford , Sheffield and tie up Doncaster . In this network was also the route of the former Stockton and Darlington Railway .
