Diary of a Scandal (English Notes on a Scandal ) is a British drama directed by Richard Eyre from 2006 . The plot is based on the novel Notes on a Scandal by Zoë Heller from 2003.

action

Barbara Covett, who is over 60 years old, is a history teacher at St. George's School in London, where she uses old-fashioned, rigorous methods to organize her classes. She is considered tough and not popular, but her peers respect her as a teacher. Outside of school, she leads a rather lonely existence, with no friends and no family of her own. That changes when one day 37-year-old art teacher Sheba Hart is transferred to her school. The pedagogically rather poor new teacher is immediately inspected by Covett, who tries to enrich her dreary everyday life by closely observing her colleague and making first attempts at contact. Covett befriends the unconventional, open-minded colleague and is strongly attracted to her. In a conversation, Sheba later confides in Barbara; she laments the cessation of passion in the relationship with Richard, her 20 years older man, and wishes, the existence as mother of their children, the year 15 of heartache stricken Polly and Ben, her son with Down syndrome to escape, .

During a school performance, Barbara Covett notices her colleague's absence. She looks for her and watches as she has sex with the student Steven Connolly. Barbara Covett later confronts Sheba Hart about it. Sheba does not deny anything and describes how she "slipped into" the affair with the 15-year-old. Barbara promises to keep Sheba silent, but uses her knowledge of the affair as leverage to penetrate deeper into Sheba's private life. At the same time it becomes clear that she hopes for more than friendship from Sheba as thanks for her secrecy. However, the young teacher does not manage to break away from Steven, although she increasingly takes care of Richard, Polly and Ben.

When one day Barbara's decrepit cat is about to be euthanized, Barbara demands that Sheba accompany her. However, Sheba has to refuse to be present at the school play where her son appears as a magician. Barbara, who discovers that Sheba failed to keep her promise to break up with Steven, feels abandoned and hurt by her. When a colleague admits his feelings for Sheba, Barbara indicates to him that Sheba is more likely to like younger men, yes, students - and drops Stevens name. This makes the scandal public, the tabloid press pounces on the story. Barbara is exposed as an accomplice at school and suspended from class because she refuses to agree to early retirement. It is also revealed that, not for the first time, Barbara destroyed a colleague's relationship in a desire to escape her loneliness. Sheba's marriage breaks up when her affair becomes known, she separates from her husband and moves in with Barbara, whose betrayal she does not yet suspect. In Barbara's apartment, however, she finds her diary, in which all the course of events is meticulously documented, exposing Barbara's betrayal. Sheba then leaves her supposed friend's apartment and returns to her family.

Sheba Hart is sentenced to ten months' imprisonment at the end of the film. Barbara, on the other hand, meets Anabelle, a young woman Sheba's age who is reading an article about the verdict in a daily newspaper. Barbara approaches them and tries to find a new friendship in this way.

Reviews

Justin Chang praised the performance of Judi Dench in Variety magazine on December 8, 2006, for engaging viewers to develop compassion for the loneliness of the character played by Dench. The portrayal of Cate Blanchett is described as "absolutely convincing".

Barbara Covett, embodied by Judi Dench, writes Peter Zander in Die Welt , “loves women - but hates herself for it. Has forced himself to suppress her feelings all his life and believes that he can only extort such feelings by force. No so many films about the 'bad lesbian', but about homophobia and how it can bend people. "
