Oak Lawn is a municipality in Cook County in the US state of Illinois in the United States. At the 2000 census it had 55,245 inhabitants.

Oak Lawn is a suburb of Chicago and is 25 km southwest of the city. The municipality has a size of 22.3 km².
history
On April 21, 1967, a devastating tornado struck the Oak Lawn community. At 5:30 p.m., a tornado of the estimated magnitude F4 hit the ground near Palos Hills . It intensified, causing a 16 mile (104 km / h) ground speed path of destruction through Oak Lawn, Hometown , Evergreen Park, and the south side of Chicago before moving on to Lake Michigan . 33 people died and there were over 1,000 injured. 152 houses were destroyed and 900 damaged. The total damage was $ 50 million.
Oak Lawn Stop Sign Program
In 2007, Oak Lawn began adding humorous billboards to their stop signs to encourage drivers to pay more attention to the signs. The billboards were an idea of the mayor, and residents were encouraged to submit their own ideas.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and IDOT raised concerns about the use of these non-compliant panels, and so they were removed in April 2008. At first the mayor refused, but IDOT threatened to withhold infrastructure funds.
Demographic data
According to the United States Census 2000 , 55,245 residents lived in 22,220 households. The population was composed of 93.35% white, 1.73% Asian and 1.22% black. Hispanics or Latinos made up 5.33% of the population. The per capita income was $ 23,877 and 5.4% of the population was below the poverty line .
