history

Until the church is planted

Untereukirchen (originally Neukirchen) became an independent political municipality in the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria in 1818 . In order to avoid confusing the name with Neukirchen an der Alz, the royal government approved the name change to Unterneukirchen on July 19, 1857. The economic importance grew with the construction of Alzkanals 1916-1922 and the carbide factory hard, which was built from 1917 to 1920. On July 1, 1971, the previously independent community of Oberburgkirchen was incorporated into Unterneukirchen. Despite the industrialization, this village community has retained its rural character.

The community experienced great changes with the beginning of industrialization, especially with the construction of the southern German calcium cyanamide works in the Untereukirchen district of Hart between 1916 and 1920. This carbide plant became the community's lifeline.

20th and 21st centuries

Sights include the town's landmark, the old Gothic parish church of St. Johannes and Egidius (1479). In the entrance area there is still an old ossuary. In 1962 a new, modern parish church was built in the center of the village, the Christ the King's Church. Also worth seeing is the old school and sacristan's house, which was built after 1803 with the stones of the old church in St. Georgen (near Altötting). Today this building serves as a "culture house" with rooms for exhibitions and music lessons. A small country brewery with a brewery restaurant is also worth seeing. In the municipality there are also some old and beautifully preserved farmsteads, often with the roof turret with roof bell that is common in the Oberland. A Catholic kindergarten and a primary school are located in the village. In 2004 Unterneukirchen got a bypass road of the B299, which led to a calming of the town center. In addition to many individual farms, the community also includes the villages of Gasteig and Oberschroffen, as well as part of the village of Hart / Alz.

Incorporations

On July 1, 1971 Oberburgkirchen was incorporated.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 2,072 to 3,199 by 1,127 inhabitants or 54.4% - the highest percentage increase in the district in the period mentioned.

Due to a temporary insolvency from 2017, the formerly listed company became the property of an investment company. A location in Unterneukirchen will continue to be operated.

Churches

Untereukirchen has two churches, the Christkönigs-Kirche (parish church) and the church of St. Johannes (former parish church). St. John's Church was built around 1479, the date of the laying of the foundation stone is not known. When St. John's Church was too small, the parish decided in 1962 to build a new parish church. The foundation stone was laid on August 28, 1960 and it was consecrated on September 9, 1962 by coadjutor bishop Antonius Hofmann .
