Olha Hennadijiwna Charlan ( Ukrainian Ольга Геннадіївна Харлан , English transliteration Olga Kharlan ; born September 4, 1990 in Mykolaiv , Ukrainian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Ukrainian saber fencer , Olympic champion and world champion.
Life
Olha Charlan had dance lessons from the age of six. Since her parents could no longer pay for this, she started fencing training at the age of nine, as her godfather worked as a trainer in a club and this was free of charge for the family. In 2003 she won the Ukrainian fencing championships for the first time.
Olha Charlan was voted Ukrainian "Sportswoman of the Year" because of her sporting success in 2008 and 2009.
Since the Ukrainian regional elections in 2010, Olga Kharlan has been a member of the Mykolaiv City Council for the Party of Regions ; she lives in Mykolaiv . It was nominated for the Ukrainian parliament in the parliamentary elections in 2012 in October. The Party of Regions achieved 72 seats; its 194th place on the electoral list was not enough to enter parliament.
She has an older sister, Tatiana.
successes
After some successes with the juniors, Olha Charlan won her first international medal as an active athlete at the European Fencing Championships 2006 in Izmir , she won silver in the saber singles behind Sofja Velikaya . In 2005 she had already received bronze with the team at the European Championships in Zalaegerszeg .
In the final against China in the saber team competition of the 2008 Olympic Games , Charlan won 22 of the 45 goals and the winning goal and thus pulled the team (Olha Charlan, Olena Chomrowa , Halyna Pundyk and Olha Shownir ) to win the gold medal. In the singles she was eliminated by Sada Jacobson and only reached thirteenth place.
She was extremely successful at the 2009 European Fencing Championships in Plovdiv , where she won the gold medal both in the individual competition and with the Ukrainian team. Later, both individually and as a team, were named Ukrainian Sportsman of the Year 2009 . In the same year at the fencing world championships , Olha Charlan won the gold medal with the team and in the individual she only lost to Mariel Zagunis and thus won silver.
At the European Fencing Championships 2010 she won the gold medal again with the team. In both 2011 and 2012 she won the gold medal at the European Individual Championships. At the 2012 Olympics , she won the battle for third place against Mariel Zagunis and received the bronze medal.
In 2013 she won gold in singles at the Summer Universiade in Kazan , was European individual champion in Zagreb and world champion in Budapest both singles and with a team. In 2014 she was again individual European and individual world champion .
In 2016 she won the bronze medal in saber fencing against the Frenchman Manon Brunet at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro .
Honors
On July 25, 2013 she was awarded the Ukrainian Order of Merit 1st Class by the Ukrainian President for achieving high sports results at the XXVII. World Summer Universiade awarded in Kazan.
