Oyo is a federal state of the West African country Nigeria with the capital Ibadan , which is also the largest city in the state with 3,565,810 inhabitants (2005).

geography

The state is located in the west of the country and is bordered by the state of Kwara to the north, the state of Ogun to the south, Benin to the west and the state of Osun to the east .

history

The state was formed on February 3, 1976 from part of the former state "Western". The first governor was David Medayese Jembibewon between March 1976 and July 1978. The current governor has been Adebayo Alao-Akala since 2006 .

The state is divided into 33 Local Government Areas . These are: Afijio, Akinyele, Atiba, Atisbo, Egbeda, Ibadan North, Ibadan North-East, Ibadan North-West, Ibadan South-East, Ibadan South-West, Ibarapa Central, Ibarapa East, Ibarapa North, Ido, Irepo, Iseyin , Itesiwaju, Iwajowa, Kajola, Lagelu, Ogbomosho North, Ogbomosho South, Ogo-Oluwa, Olorunsogo, Oluyole, Ona-Ara, Orelope, Ori-Ire, Oyo, Oyo East, Saki East, Saki West and Surulere.

economy

The main industry is agriculture . The climatic conditions allow the cultivation of grain , corn , yams , cassava , millet , rice , bananas , cocoa and so on. Animal husbandry and milk production as well as the extraction of natural resources are also important . There are clay , kaolin and aquamarine mined.
