Paul Hoffmann (born March 25, 1902 in Düsseldorf , † December 2, 1990 in Vienna ) was a German actor and director of the Vienna Burgtheater from 1968 to 1971 .

Life

The son of a playwright and theater critic studied German, art history and philosophy in Marburg, Cologne and Würzburg and received his doctorate in 1924 with a thesis on the Viennese playwright and Burgtheater director Johann Ludwig Deinhardstein .

Discovered in student performances, he made his debut at the Stadttheater Würzburg in 1924 without any acting training , in 1925 he played at the Stadttheater Aachen , a year later he moved to the Gera Theater (under Walter Bruno Iltz ) and finally to the Dresden Schauspielhaus in 1927 , where he stayed until 1946. Here he played Mephisto in Faust , Iago in Othello , Franz Moor in The Robbers and the title characters of Hamlet and Fiesco .

In 1946 he moved to the Württemberg State Theater in Stuttgart, where he took over as artistic director in 1950. From 1952 to 1957 he was acting director here. During his time in Stuttgart, for example, he played General Harras in Des Teufels General and the title role in Pirandello's Heinrich IV. His productions included Nathan the Wise and Death of a Salesman . In 1959 he went to the Vienna Burgtheater and was its director from 1968 to 1971, and since 1972 honorary member. He was also seen in numerous guest performances on other stages.

From 1936 he took on film roles, in which he appeared mostly as a charming grand seigneur.
