Predrag "Peja" Stojaković ( Serbian : Предраг Стојаковић ; born June 9, 1977 in Požega , Yugoslavia ) is a former Serbian basketball player who was active between 1992 and 2011, most of the time in the North American professional league NBA . In his career, Stojaković was three times NBA All-Star and is considered one of the best distance shooters in league history, with a total of 1,760 converted three-point throws.

Career

PAOK (1994-1998)

From 1995 Stojaković played in the Greek league for PAOK Thessaloniki . In order to be able to play in European competitions, he took on the Greek citizenship. But he never played for the Greek national basketball team. Although he was selected as 14th in the 1996 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings , he stayed with PAOK until 1998.

Sacramento Kings (1998-2006)

At the Kings he came off the bench in the first two years, and was only set as a starter from 2000. Since then he has steadily improved and was appointed to the All-Star Team three times (2002-2004). Stojaković was an excellent long-range shooter. In 2001 he finished second in the election for the NBA Most Improved Player (player who has taken the best development in the course of a season) after increasing his points yield from 11.9 to 20.4 points per game.

In the 2003/04 season , he was responsible for replacing Chris Webber , who lost due to injury . Stojaković mastered this task with ease. He achieved the second-best league value with 24.2 points per game and was fourth in the election for Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the end of the season . He also won the three-point shootout as part of the All-Star Games when he hit 20 of 25 three-point throws. Stojaković shied away from the press in Sacramento and lives rather withdrawn. In recognition of his achievements, the Kings withdrew his jersey number 16 on December 16, 2014, which has not been given to any player since then.

Indiana Pacers (2006)

In 2005/06 he moved to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Ron Artest . He stayed with the Pacers until the end of the season, where he scored 19.5 points on average.

New Orleans Hornets (2006-2010)

Stojaković signed a contract with the New Orleans Hornets (then New Orleans / Oklahoma City Hornets ) in 2006 . In November 2006, Peja set a new personal record: He used a total of 15 litters in 22 throwing attempts and thus scored 42 points in one game. Unlike during his time in Sacramento, Stojaković was no longer the star of the team with the Hornets and his statistics were slowly falling. In his last year for the Hornets, he averaged 12.6 points.

Toronto Raptors (2010-2011)

On November 20, 2010, Stojaković was delivered to the Toronto Raptors . Due to a knee injury, he was only used twice and was released from the team on January 20, 2011.

Dallas Mavericks (2011)

In January 2011, Stojaković signed a contract with the Dallas Mavericks after they had given Alexis Ajinça to the Raptors. With the Mavericks, Stojaković won the 2011 NBA championship. After the season he ended his career. In his NBA career, Stojaković converted a total of 1,760 three-point throws.

International

With the national team of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia , he won the basketball world championship in 2002 and the European championship in 2001 , where he was also voted the best player of the tournament.

After the playing career

After his playing career, Stojakovic became director of player development and manager of the Sacramento training team, the Reno Bighorns (later Stockton Kings) at the Sacramento Kings . His duties included spotting and monitoring talent in the US and abroad. In May 2018 he moved to the Kings' position as assistant to manager Vlade Divac .

On December 16, 2014, the Sacramento Kings declared that Stojaković's shirt number 16 will no longer be given to other players.
