The Pfannenstiel-Zürichberg chain or Pfannenstiel chain is a chain of hills in the canton of Zurich ( Switzerland ) between Lake Zurich in the southwest and the upper Glatt valley ( Aa Bach , Greifensee and Glatt ) in the northeast. The approximately 19 kilometer long range of hills rises northwest of the Glatttalschwelle near Hombrechtikon and extends northwest over the Pfannenstiel and a few other hills to the Zürichberg in Zurich . The highest point of the Pfannenstiel is at 853  m above sea level. M. also the highest point of the chain.

The hills belonging to it in the southeast have relatively low heights and are not very pronounced. The tunnel ( 661  m above sea level ) appears most clearly as an independent hill. To the northwest, the Pfannenstiel is followed by the second highest hill in the chain, the Wassberg ( 748  m above sea level ). Between these two hills lies the saddle called Forch ( 679  m above sea level ) as a clear turning point in the range of hills , over which a narrow-gauge suburban railway , the Forchbahn , and the Forchautostrasse , a motorway-like road, run from Zurich . In the north-west of the Wassberg , the less pronounced hills Guglen ( 708  m above sea level , west of Ebmatingen ) and Oeschbrig (Oettlisberg, 698  m above sea level , on the edge of Zurich- Witikon ) connect . The hills in the urban area of Zurich, the Adlisberg ( 701  m above sea level ) and the Zürichberg ( 676  m above sea level ) are again clear elevations .

Geology and geography

The ridge was created in the Tertiary . Nagelfluh layers often appear on the Pfannenstiel in the rocks of the Upper Freshwater Molasse , which come from a separate small bed (Pfannenstiel bed) or a long arm of the Hörnli bed . They alternate with layers of sandstone and marl , limestone is rarer . Ice-age deposits of the Linth glacier lie above the Molasse in some places. In the Jörentobel near Fällanden , the glacier has left behind a large group of erratic blocks .

The hills west of the Milchbuck between Limmattal and Furttal ( Käferberg , Gubrist , Altberg ) are no longer counted as part of the chain.

There are numerous villages along the Pfannenstiel chain: On the Gold Coast , the north bank of Lake Zurich, these are the following communities from west to east: Zurich, Zollikon , Küsnacht , Erlenbach , Herrliberg , Meilen , Uetikon am See , Männedorf and Stäfa . On the slopes above the lake are the villages of Witikon (now a district of Zurich), Zollikerberg , the municipality of Zumikon and a few hamlets on the Küsnachterberg, von Herrliberg and Meilen. On the east side at the foot of the slope (from northwest to southeast) are Zurich's Schwamendingen , Dübendorf , Fällanden , Maur and Uessikon am Greifensee and Mönchaltorf districts . The villages of Gockhausen (zu Dübendorf), Pfaffhausen and Benglen (municipality of Fällanden), Binz, Ebmatingen and Aesch (zu Maur), Egg and Oetwil am See are located on the eastern slope .

The Küsnachter Dorfbach and the Wehrenbach , both of which flow into Lake Zurich, are among the most important streams in the Pfannenstiel chain . The brooks south of it ( Erlenbacher Dorfbach , Meilemer Dorfbach) and the numerous brooks on the east side of the ( Mettlenbach , Tüfentalerbach, Uessiker Dorfbach, Dorfbach (Maur) , Rohrbach , Aschbach , Breitibach , Geerenbach , Gockhuserbach , Chämmertenbach , Sagentobelbach ) are mostly short and carry little water.

Recreation area

The Pfannenstiel-Zürichberg chain is a popular local recreation area in the canton of Zurich . Not far from the highest point on the Pfannenstiel there is an observation tower that had to give way to a new building on the Zurich Oberland mountain Bachtel and was rebuilt here. There is an inn just below the tower. In winter, when there is enough snow, a cross-country ski run is created near the hamlets of Vorder- and Hinter-Guldenen on the Pfannenstiel . To the northwest of the Forch is the Wehrmännerdenkmal ( Forchdenkmal ). There is a country inn on the southeast slope of the Wassberg. On the Adlisberg there is another observation tower ( Loorenkopf observation tower ), and close to the highest point of the Zürichberg is the zoological garden of Zürich . The entire ridge can be easily reached by public transport: by bus to the Vorderen Hochwacht (Pfannenstiel), by Forchbahn to the southern main mountain and to Wassberg, by bus in Zurich to Witikon to Öschbrig and Adlisberg and by tram and two funiculars in Zurich to the Zürichberg.

Geographical and administrative term

The Pfannenstiel-Zürichberg chain , which spans a larger area , is often abbreviated to Pfannenstiel , both geographically and administratively .

The planning region Pfannenstil (officially written with "i"), formed on the basis of the Zurich Planning and Building Act, Section 12, is a municipal association that covers the communities of Zollikon, Zumikon, Küsnacht, Erlenbach, Herrliberg, Meilen, Egg, Uetikon am See , Männedorf, Oetwil am See, Stäfa and Hombrechtikon. It is the sphere of activity of the Zurich Planing Group Pfannenstil (ZPP), which deals with the perception of regional planning interests.

The MS region Pfannenstiel (officially spelled “ie”) is one of 106 Swiss regions that the Federal Statistical Office has formed on the basis of the “mobilité-spatiale” model for numerous scientific and regional political purposes. Spatially, it is identical to the Pfannenstil planning region.

There are also areas defined by private law organizations that extend across the entire Pfannenstiel-Zürichberg chain, but bear the short name Pfannenstiel , for example the Pfannenstiel section of the homeowners' association of the Canton of Zurich.

nature and landscape

The Pfannenstiel region also includes three landscape protection areas in the municipalities of Hombrechtikon, Küsnacht and Stäfa, including the Küsnachter Tobel , which is registered as a “geological and geomorphological object of regional importance” in the cantonal inventory of nature and landscape protection objects .

The natural network Pfannenstil was founded in 1998 by the Zurich planning group Pfannenstil (ZPP) on the occasion of the rapid growth of the settlements in the region. The aim of the network is to implement the overall nature conservation concept of the Canton of Zurich and to establish ecological networking in accordance with the regional structure plan in the Pfannenstiel region. Various projects are dedicated to the preservation and care of the area as an attractive local recreation area in the sense of a diverse and natural cultural landscape as well as measures to promote biodiversity .
