Rachel [ ˈraː.ɛl ] (Hebrew Rachel רחל) [ ra: 'χe: l ], French Racquel , Spanish and Portuguese Raquel , is a female given name . It comes from Hebrew and roughly means ewe . One variant is Rachael .

Rahel , Laban's daughter and Jacob 's favorite wife , has an ambivalent role as a mother within the Jewish religion, as she dies giving birth to her son Ben-Oni ( son of misfortune ), whom Jacob immediately after the birth in son of happiness , i.e. Ben -Jamin , renamed (Genesis 35: 16-19).
