action
Ben Matheson's premonition is confirmed when electricity grinds to a halt around the world. Just before the collapse, he saves something important on a USB stick. The storage medium, designed as a trailer, not only contains data that explains the cause of the power failure, but it can also ensure that electricity flows again within a limited radius.
15 years later, mankind is still living without electricity like before the industrial revolution. The US has broken up into half a dozen independent subregions ruled by warlords . Ben lives in an idyllic village with his daughter Charlie and son Danny. He found a new partner in the British girl Maggie Foster after his wife Rachel died. Peace in the village is disturbed when one day General Sebastian "Bass" Monroe, leader of the "Monroe Republic", sends a militia under the command of Tom Neville into the village to arrest Ben. Ben is killed, Danny kidnapped. Before he dies, however, Ben gives the disk tag to his friend Aaron Pittman and asks him to help Charlie. Together with Maggie, they set out to find Ben's brother Miles, who is supposed to help them rescue Danny. When they find Miles in a nearby town, Miles realizes that the militia are also targeting him. Together they manage to escape. Maggie dies a little later, but the group is joined by resistance fighter Nora Clayton, who is Miles' ex-girlfriend. Charlie meets the young man Nate, for whom she quickly feels affection. However, this turns out to be a fighter of the Monroe militia. It later becomes clear that his name is not Nate but Jason, the son of Major Tom Neville, a major in the Monroe militia.
Miles was once, some time after the Blackout, the driving force behind the founding of the Monroe Republic and initially the second man behind his then best friend Bass Monroe, as he wanted to contain the spreading chaos. He and Monroe were childhood friends and had served together in an elite army unit. However, when he saw that he had turned into a brutal dictator, he tried to kill him and fled.
In addition, it becomes clear that Charlie's mother Rachel, who is believed to be dead, is in Monroe's custody: Since she was one of the group of researchers who once built the device on behalf of the government that caused the blackout through nanotechnology , the general wants to blackmail her, the electricity turn on again. For this he needs her son Danny. After some confusion, Charlie, Aaron, Nora and Miles are able to free Danny and Rachel, but beforehand she has built a device that amplifies the signal from the USB trailer so that Monroe is able to use helicopters and tanks. Miles tries again to kill Monroe, who initially wants to reconcile with him, but fails again. Monroe is now using his helicopters mercilessly against the rebels. In the successful attempt to shoot down the helicopter with the amplifier on board, Danny is killed. In retrospect, it becomes clear that he was terminally ill and only survived thanks to the same technology that caused the blackout.
Rachel's enigmatic former boss, Randall Flynn, offers Monroe his help; he brings Rachel temporarily under his control and explains to her that he wants to establish a dictatorship in which electricity is available only to the rulers. With Charlie's help, Rachel escapes, but Randall gives Monroe access to new amplifiers and an atomic bomb that Monroe wants to detonate in the "neighboring state" of Georgia. Miles is able to prevent the attack, however. In response, President Kelly Foster declares war on the Monroe Republic and offers Miles command of an army of 200 soldiers to support the rebels, which he accepts. Jason joins the rebels after his doubts about the Monroe militia and feelings about Charlie grew. After the capture or capture of the three southern outposts of the Monroe Republic, Miles attracts Monroe's attention, who reminds Captain Jeremy Baker that his militia also began with a few small victories. President Foster decides to have a former Monroe Militia officer fight Miles on her side: Tom Neville.
Meanwhile, Aaron and Rachel are on their way to a certain "tower", which can turn the electricity back on. Rachel shows Aaron a book about turning the electricity back on, which shows his photo. There is also a report on software that he has developed. Nothing is known about the extent or the purpose of the use of this software. Grace Beaumont, who owns one of the twelve disk tags, is held captive in the Randall Tower. She should restart the elevator so that it can go to the twelfth floor. During Randall's absence, her guardian is killed after he got into the elevator and it reached the twelfth floor.
During constant attacks by the Monroe Republic, the forces of the Rebels and the Georgia Federation are severely decimated. President Foster tells Miles that either he must come up with a new plan for a successful fight against Monroe, otherwise she will surrender. Nora is kidnapped in one such attack, and Charlie and Jason get together after Jason is seriously injured. After three weeks of torture, including drugs, Nora Monroe reveals the locations of Miles, Tom and Rachel. She later escapes through a scientist, Sanborn, who has worked with Rachel and Ben.
Meanwhile, Monroe decides that Randall is no longer of any use and gives instructions to kill him. However, Flynn reveals information about the tower, including that there are weapons in it that make his helicopters look like toys. Monroe therefore decides to want to take the tower, but when she arrives there and Randall wants to gain access, the system denies him this and it is shown that a new group of people is in the tower. At the same time, Rachel and Aaron approach the tower and thus Monroe's camp. They come to the realization that they can only get to the tower if they can bypass the militia. Rachel therefore decides to carry out her personal campaign of revenge, to kill Monroe and at the same time to give Aaron an opportunity to get to the tower unnoticed by the militia. Rachel, disguised as a militiaman, enters Monroe's tent that night with a grenade in her hand that she pulls out the pen.
characters
main characters
- Miles Matheson
- Miles is the brother of Ben and the uncle of Charlie and Danny. Before the blackout, he was Bass's best friend and, like him, a respected sergeant in the US Marines . After the electricity ran out, he and Bass founded the militia, which he turned into a merciless machine. After his attempted murder of Bass and the subsequent escape, he went to Chicago , where he opened a bar. He is urged by his niece Charlie to help her in the liberation of Danny and to take the lead role as he is an excellent and very well trained fighter.
- Charlotte "Charlie" Matheson
- Charlie grew up without electricity, which made him a headstrong, strong, courageous woman. She takes good care of her younger brother Danny. When her father is killed and her brother kidnapped, she asks her uncle Miles for help. She meets the fighter Nate, who later turns out to be a militia fighter by the name of Jason. After leaving the Monroe militia and joining the rebels, Charlie and Jason get together.
- Tom Neville
- Before joining the Monroe Republic military after the blackout, Tom was an insurance claims appraiser and not very successful. In the militia he has risen to captain and helps Monroe to find the data carrier tag of the Matheson brothers. Driven by his ambitious wife Julia, the unscrupulous Neville hopes one day to come to power himself. After repeatedly disappointing Monroe and his son Jason joining the rebels, he escapes with Julia. He is now fighting alongside Miles for the Georgia Republic.
- Aaron Pittman
- Aaron led a life of luxury and technology surrounded by technology prior to the blackout as he was a senior Google employee . He was also happy with his wife, Priscilla, who he left after the blackout after he thought of himself that he could not protect her. He met Ben and his family, befriended them, and joined them. When Ben is killed, he helps Charlie and Maggie find out the truth and free Danny.
- Sebastian "Bass" Monroe
- Bass was Miles's best friend, and like Miles a sergeant in the US Marines. His family died 20 years ago on the way to a Harry Potter film. As a result, he had suicidal thoughts, but was encouraged by Miles. When the blackout hit, Monroe and Miles were in a car on the highway. The two set off on foot and built their own army, occupying much of the east coast of the United States. Both learned to be excellent swordsmen. However, Monroe soon developed into a monster, for example not only killing an assassin himself, but also his entire family. As a result Miles turned away from him and wanted to kill him. However, at the last second he didn't have the heart and fled. Bass knows that Ben knows something about the blackout and wants to kidnap him - among other things to blackmail his wife Rachel, who is believed to be dead. As the series progresses, he learns that he has a son with Miles' then girlfriend and wants to know where he is. But his mother, Emma, is shot by a rebel before she can betray Monroe any more. In season 2, Monroe is separated from his soldiers and ultimately allies with Miles and the rebels. Miles, who Emma told him, soon tells him where his son is. Together with Rachel, they find Connor and he joins them - mostly because his father promises him to rebuild the Monroe Republic together. Rachel and Bass often get into arguments because she still can't trust him. At the end of the season, however, Monroe proves himself to her by taking the captured president to the agreed meeting point. Bass often comes across as heartless, but he would do anything for his friend Miles. Like all of the militia, he has an " M " tattooed, which stands for both "Monroe" and "Matheson".
- Jason Neville
- Jason is actually a soldier in the Monroe Militia. He pretends to be Nate, sneaks into the village on behalf of Monroe, where, among other things, Charlie lives, to whom he has had feelings since the beginning, and follows him, Aaron and Maggie to Chicago to find Miles. He informs his people, but he realizes that he has developed serious feelings for Charlie, and therefore repeatedly helps her secretly out of dangerous situations. It soon turns out that Jason is the son of Tom Neville, from whom he finally renounces the cruelty of the militia and the feelings of hatred towards his father. Jason then joins the rebels and begins a relationship with Charlie.
- Benjamin "Ben" Matheson
- Ben is married to Rachel and raised Charlie and Danny with her. Ben knew of the upcoming blackout, as did Rachel after they both worked for Randall. After she reluctantly left the family after the blackout, he found a new love in Maggie. He was supposed to be kidnapped by the Monroe militia, but is shot while trying.
- Rachel Matheson
- Rachel is the wife of Ben and the mother of Charlie and Danny. As a scientist at a secret research facility, she was involved in triggering the blackout. After the blackout, she wants to start a new life with her family, but forced by the new circumstances, she (in) voluntarily places herself in the hands of the Monroe Army. Her family thought she was dead. Because of her scientific skills, both Monroe and Randall are trying to get hold of her. After Rachel and Danny's deaths, she seeks revenge. She goes with Aaron to the tower, where she gets into a tent of Monroe with a grenade in hand.
- Danny Matheson
- Danny is Charlie's 18-year-old brother and, like her, grew up without any technology - unlike Charlie, he can't even vaguely remember electricity. He also has asthma and frequent seizures. Danny he has a very good relationship with Charlie and would do anything for his family. He is kidnapped by Tom and his men because Ben is shot. Shortly after his liberation, including by Charlie, he dies in combat after shooting down a helicopter.
- Maggie Foster
- Maggie is a doctor and the new woman at Ben's side. She and Charlie had a difficult relationship for a long time, as Charlie viewed the relationship with suspicion. After Ben dies, she and Charlie go to find Miles and help the group with her medical knowledge. She eventually dies in an attack by a confused man who fatally injures her with a knife.
Minor characters
- Grace
- Grace lives alone and secluded on a property that she guards like a madwoman. Because she has a computer in the attic that she uses to chat with a stranger. Grace, who was a colleague of Rachel's before the blackout and also has a USB tag that allows electricity to flow in the immediate vicinity, wants to prevent Sebastian from finding out about this computer at all costs. She is eventually kidnapped by her former boss, Randall Flynn.
- Randall Flynn
- Prior to the blackout, he was the assistant secretary of defense and, after losing his son in the Afghan war, drove the development of the secret weapon that Rachel, Grace and others would build for him. He pursues opaque plans, for the realization of which he wants to use Monroes and his army.
production
On May 7, 2012, NBC ordered the serial pilot from JJ Abrams and Eric Kripke . At the same time, Billy Burke , Andrea Roth , David Lyons , Anna Lise Phillips and several other starring roles were given in the project. In mid-May, the station announced the order for a first season with 13 episodes. Just a few days after ordering the series, Andrea Roth and Anna Lise Phillips left the series. While Roth's character was being re-cast, the character of Phillips was surprisingly allowed to die; it will only return on an irregular, recurring basis (in flashbacks). On July 1, 2012, Elizabeth Mitchell took on the role of Andrea Roth. A day later it was announced that Daniella Alonso would play a new lead role. In mid-September 2012 Kim Raver , David Meunier and David Andrews were hired for supporting and guest roles.
After only three episodes broadcast, NBC announced the production of seven more episodes, so that the first season now has 20 episodes. At the end of April 2013, the series was extended by a second season with 22 episodes. In May 2014, NBC announced the end of the series after two seasons.
The series, however, came to an end with several comics that appeared in May and June 2015. Four chapters have now been published in English and are available online.

criticism
The series has so far received a mixed response. It was criticized that the conception of the series did not seem very well thought out in some points. For example, the equipment, especially the clothing of the actors, generally does not leave the impression that it is the product of a post-industrial society. In terms of content, the basic idea was criticized that civilizational progress can only be tied to certain technical framework conditions such as the existence of usable electricity, without which anomie would break out immediately . This also applies to the assumption, at least suggested in the series, that the ban on firearms for private individuals (and thus ultimately the enforcement of the state monopoly of force ) not only enables the rise of various warlords and the establishment of a reign of terror, but actually leads to it: firearms are symbols of individual freedom in Revolution . This point must also be viewed against the background of the gun laws, which are controversially discussed even in the USA .
In addition, the sudden failure of all electrical systems in the reactors of the nuclear power plants would lead to a core meltdown.
Experts do indeed assume that public order could collapse in the event of a total blackout and a subsequent famine. However, the series does not show sufficiently clearly by which mechanisms public order ends so quickly in chaos.
