Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a French town with 9893 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Bouches-du-Rhône in the region of Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Arles and is the capital of the canton of the same name .

geography

The southern French city is located on the Alpilles mountain range , about ten kilometers north of Les Baux-de-Provence between Avignon ( 20 km north), Cavaillon ( 19 km east), Arles ( 25 km south-west) and Tarascon ( 13 km west). The municipality is part of the Alpilles Regional Nature Park .

history

By the Treaty of Péronne , signed on July 8, 1641 , which forbade any French interference in the government or justice of Monaco , Saint Remy was given to the Grimaldi family to thank the Prince of Monaco for driving the Spaniards out of the region. To compensate for areas confiscated in Spain, the Grimaldi received four fiefs in France, including Saint Remy and Les Baux.

Personalities

  • Nostradamus (1503–1566), pharmacist and doctor, was born in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
  • Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890), Dutch painter, was treated in the psychiatric clinic of the local monastery of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in 1889/90 . A number of paintings were created during this period, including the famous Starry Night . Other paintings such as The Madhouse Garden in Saint-Rémy show the sanatorium in which Vincent van Gogh lived.
  • Marie Mauron (1896–1986), French author and author of numerous novels and writings on the cultural heritage of Provence , lived and worked in her Mas d'Angirany in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
  • Alice Miller (1923-2010), Swiss author and childhood researcher, spent the last years of her life in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
  • Marco Richterich (1929–1997), Swiss painter, lived and worked from 1952 in Saint-Rémy.
  • Pierre Bergé (1930–2017), French entrepreneur and patron, lived and died in Saint-Rémy.
  • Caroline von Hannover (* 1957), Princess of Monaco, lives with her children in Saint-Rémy.
