Olaseni Abdul Jelili "Shane" Lawal (born October 8, 1986 in Abeokuta , Ogun ) is an American - Nigerian basketball player . Lawal grew up in the United States and began a career as a professional player after graduating, which initially took him to less challenging leagues in Qatar and Libya as well as to second and third-rate leagues in Spain and Italy . In the 2013/14 season, the Kazakh champion BK Astana defended his national title and was able to recommend himself in the Eastern European VTB United League 2013/14 for the Italian cup winner Banco di Sardegna Sassari, with whom he won the Italian championship in 2015. From 2015 to 2017 Lawal was under contract for the European top club FC Barcelona. With the Nigerian national team he won the African Championship in 2015 and was a participant in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

Career

After graduating from school in Southfield Lawal stayed in Oakland County and received a place at Oakland University , where he played for the college team Golden Grizzlies from 2005 on in the Mid-Continent Conference (MCC) of the NCAA . However, the Golden Grizzlies, who won in 2005 nor the championship tournament of the MCC were able to celebrate any special achievements more and after three years Lawal left the university and moved to the city of, first Detroit at the Wayne State University . Their college team Warriors , however, plays in Division II of the NCAA, which is generally not enough to then start a successful professional career. For the Wayne State Warriors, however, Lawal scored the only triple-double in the history of this team in December 2008 when he was able to score 19 points, ten rebounds and eleven shot blocks in one game.

After completing his studies in 2009, Lawal started a professional career, initially playing in Doha for the al-Arabi SC. In the 2010/11 season he was initially active in the third-rate LEB Plata for the club from Guadalajara before playing for the al-Ahly SC in Benghazi in January 2011 . After six weeks and the outbreak of civil war in Libya , he left the country under adventurous circumstances together with a compatriot and teammate and was committed to the LEB Oro for the 2011/12 season by the Spanish second division club CB Clavijo from Logroño . With this club, he missed in tenth place only because of the poorer direct comparison to move into the play-offs for promotion to the ACB league . With an average of nine points and more than ten rebounds per game, Lawal barely missed a double-double on average. For the 2012/13 season Lawal moved to the former Korać Cup European Cup winner Tezenis Scaligera from Verona in the then second-highest Italian division Legadue . The club reached the play-offs for promotion to Serie A for the first time since the re-establishment in sixth place, in which they were eliminated in the first round against the first division relegated from Casale Monferrato . Lawal was by far the best rebounder of the Legadue and achieved a double-double on average with 10.5 points and 13.5 rebounds. Although he hadn't played in top clubs yet, he was invited to the 2013 NBA Summer League at the Orlando Magic .

In the 2013/14 season Lawal played for the club from Astana in Kazakhstan, for whom Rawle Marshall had previously played, who won the 2005 MCC championship tournament with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies before Lawal. The Kazakh series champion is the only participant from Asia in the regional European VTB United League , in which the team was eliminated for the second time in a row in the pre-play-offs in the round of 16 and this time failed at the eventual finalist BK Nizhny Novgorod . For the 2014/15 season Lawal was brought back to Italy by the cup winner Banco di Sardegna from Sassari in Sardinia . The championship third from the top division Lega Basket Serie A also took part for the first time in the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2014/15 , but was eliminated there just as early as afterwards in the Eurocup 2014/15 . For this Lawal won the double of championship and cup with Sassari in Italy , after which he moved to FC Barcelona . In the summer of 2015 Lawal was appointed to the squad of the Nigerian national team for the first time , with which he only lost the preliminary round match against hosts Tunisia at the 2015 African Cup of Nations in Radès and finally won the title in the final against defending champions Angola . With Barcelona, Lawal failed in both the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey and the ULEB Euroleague 2015/16 and finally lost the final series of the Spanish championship against defending champions Real Madrid . In summer 2016 Lawal took part in the Olympic Games for the first time; with the Nigerian selection Lawal could win the Olympic basketball tournament in Rio but only against Croatia out of five preliminary round games. This victory did not prevent the last group place and the early elimination after the preliminary round.
