society
Nakajima comes from the youth of the Tokyo Verdy club , which was playing in the second-rate J. League Division 2 at that time . For the 2012 season he moved up to the professional team of the capital city club. For this he made his debut on September 14, 2012 in the game against Avispa Fukuoka , when he was substituted on in the 78th minute. Just five minutes after being substituted on, he equalized the 1-1 final score. On November 21, the 18-year-old was able to score a three-pack in a 4-1 win against Tochigi SC . In his first season he scored four goals and one assist in eight appearances. In his second season in 2013 , he was used in 21 league games, in which he scored two goals and assisted one.
On January 26, 2014, Nakajima's move to first division club FC Tokyo was announced. However, his new club immediately loaned him to the second division club Kataller Toyama . For Toyama he scored 2 goals in 28 games this season . On August 29, the loan ended and Nakajima returned to FC Tokyo. Just one day later he made his debut in the J. League when he was substituted on against the Kashima Antlers in the closing stages. In the further course of the season he came on another four missions. In the following 2015 season he was still only a rotation player and only made 13 league appearances in which he could score a goal. In the third division he was used three times for the J. League U-22 selection . In 2016, too, little changed in this situation at the beginning. He was substituted on in the first game of the season on February 27, 2016 in the 0-1 defeat by Omiya Ardija and was then active in the U-22 selection in the third division. In mid-April, Nakajima also tore his inner ligament and was out for a month. It wasn't until June 18, four months after his last appearance, that he played a game for the first team. At the end of the season he became an important part of the FC Tokyo team. On August 27, he scored against Nagoya Grampus in the 91st minute to equalize 1-1. In the 3-0 home win against Shonan Bellmare on the next match day, he netted again. Another goal and two assists were added by the end of the season. The next year he performed well, especially in the J. League Cup . In seven games he scored three times and prepared four goals.
On August 23, 2017 Shōya Nakajima moved to the Portuguese first division club Portimonense SC for a year on loan . He made his debut for the newly promoted on September 8th against Benfica Lisbon . In the 1: 2 away defeat, he was able to prepare Fabrício's 1-0 opening goal . In the next game against CD Feirense he scored his first two goals for his new club in a 2-1 home win and became the first Japanese double goalscorer in a Portuguese competition. Even four days later, in the 2-5 defeat at the Estádio do Dragão at FC Porto , he netted for the team from Algarve . Portimonense signed the midfielder over the course of the 2017/18 season . His good performances were noticed by various top European clubs during this time, among others he was observed by the German clubs VfB Stuttgart , VfL Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt . In the further course of the season Nakajima was able to keep his strong form and contributed significantly to the successful relegation with 10 goals and 12 assists in 29 league games.
He also started his second season in Portugal with good performances. On September 23, 2018, he scored two goals in a 3-2 win over Vitória Guimarães and presented another. His strong performances were recognized with the September Player of the Month award . In the 4-2 home win over Sporting Lisbon on October 7th, he scored two more goals and prepared the other two.
At the beginning of February 2019, Nakajima moved to the Qatar Stars League for al-Duhail SC . The 35 million euros paid for his services made him the most expensive Japanese football player. Before that, the 28.4 million euros for Hidetoshi Nakata on his transfer from AS Roma to FC Parma was the highest transfer fee ever paid for a Japanese. For his new club, he played seven league games in the remaining 2018/19 season, in which he scored a goal.
For the 2019/20 season he returned to the Portuguese league NOS and moved to FC Porto, where he signed a five-year contract. The Portuguese first division club paid 12 million euros for 50% of the transfer rights.
