Sjarhej Martynau ( Belarusian Сяргей Анатолевіч Марты́наў ; born May 18, 1968 in Moscow , Russian SFSR ) is a former Belarusian sports shooter .

successes

Sjarhej Martynau took part in six Olympic Games . In 1988 he started in Seoul for the Soviet Union and started with the air rifle over the 10-meter distance, in which he finished 14th. His second participation did not take place until the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , where he, as well as later, competed for Belarus. In the prone position he reached sixth place with the small bore rifle, while he was eighth in the three-position fight. Four years later he won his first medal in Sydney when he won the bronze medal behind Jonas Edman and Torben Grimmel in the lying position . He finished the three-position battle in ninth place. In Athens he repeated his success from Sydney in 2004 when he again secured the bronze medal in the prone position, this time behind Matthew Emmons and Christian Lusch . In the three-position battle, however, he did not get past 29th place. He did even worse in 2008 in Beijing when he was only 34th. While lying down, he qualified for the final round, but finished it in last and eighth place. He finally celebrated his greatest success at the 2012 Olympic Games in London . Martynau only appeared in the prone position, whose qualification he completed with the full 600 points in first place. In the final round, he confirmed his performance with a world record of 705.5 points and became Olympic champion ahead of Lionel Cox and Rajmond Debevec . In 2016 he was the standard bearer at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, but without taking part in them.

Martynau secured the title eight times at world championships . After a silver medal with the air rifle team in Sarajevo in 1989 , he became world champion the following year in Moscow with the small-bore rifle team in prone and standing position, as well as in three-position combat. In the individual kneeling position, he won another silver medal. In 1994 he won two titles in team competitions in Milan: he won over 300 m in three-position competitions with both an air rifle and a free rifle. Twelve years later, in 2006 in Zagreb , the next medal wins followed with the titles in the prone position with the small-bore rifle and in the team competition with the standard rifle over 300 m in three-position combat. In 2010 he was again world champion in the prone position with the small bore rifle in Munich and in 2014 in Granada won silver in this discipline in the team classification. In 2015 he won bronze at the European Games in Baku while prone over 50 m with a small bore rifle.

Martynau is married and has two children.
