El Socorro is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Santander in Colombia .

geography

Socorro is the capital of the Comunera Province (formerly Socorro Province) in Santander and is located at an altitude of 1,300  m above sea level. NN in the Eastern Cordillera of the Colombian Andes and has an average annual temperature of around 23 ° C. The city is about 120 km from Bucaramanga . The municipality has a share in the Río Suárez and Río Fonce , which flow together in the north of the municipality. The municipality is bordered by Cabrera and Pinchote to the north, Simacota and Palmar to the west, Confines and Palmas del Socorro to the south and Páramo to the east .

The municipality of Socorro has 31,115 inhabitants, of which 25,757 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Socorro was founded on June 16, 1683 by José de Archila and José Díaz Sarmiento and received in 1771 by the Spanish King Charles III. the city law. In the viceroyalty of New Granada , Socorro became one of the most important cities with 12,000 inhabitants in the 18th century. The city was the center of the handicraft textile industry from cotton and natural fibers as well as of tobacco cultivation . Socorro was the center of the Comuneros uprising in New Granada in 1781 , led by Manuela Beltrán. The city also played an important role during the struggle for independence. In independent Colombia, Socorro was the capital of the state of Santander from 1861 to 1886. Socorro has had the current status of a municipality since 1887. Socorro has been a center of adventure and ecotourism since the end of the 20th century.

The main industries of Socorro are agriculture and cattle production . In particular, sugar cane , coffee , citrus plants , beans , corn , tobacco , bananas , cassava , tomatoes , peas and peppers are grown.
