United States State Parliament Elections 2018
On November 6, 2018, there were elections to the state parliament in the United States . In a total of 87 of the 99 chambers of parliament, ordinary elections for all or parts of parliament were due on that day. There were also by-elections for seats in state legislatures in some states.
On the same day there were also elections for the House of Representatives , the Senate , governorships and other state-wide and local electoral offices.
overview
The elections to the state parliaments, together with the congressional and gubernatorial elections, were considered the most important indicator of the popularity of US President Donald Trump (so-called midterm election ). During the tenure of Trump's predecessor Barack Obama , the Democrats had lost several hundred seats in the influential state legislatures. In some states these have the right to tailor the constituencies (which can be used for gerrymandering ) and can overrule vetoes of the governor with a super majority (in some states two-thirds, in others three-fifths of the mandates) . In eight states the legislative and executive branches were under the control (so-called trifecta ) of the Democrats, in 26 there were republican trifectas and in 16 different controls of parliament and governorate. 32 chambers had a (technical) democratic majority, 66 a republican majority. In Nebraska, the state legislature prohibits its members from formally registering a party.
The Democrats gained more than 350 seats in the state legislatures. As a result of the elections, there were 14 states with democratic trifectas , 22 with republican and 14 states with a divided government . The Democrats gained control in six chambers of parliament, so that by 2018 they had a majority in 38 chambers, the Republicans in 60 (+ unofficially Nebraska). In addition, the Democrats gained a super majority in six chambers, while the Republicans lost it in a total of five legislatures.
