Ståle Sandbech (born June 3, 1993 in Bærum ) is a Norwegian snowboarder . In 2010 and 2014 he took part in the Winter Olympics, and in 2014 he won silver in the men's slopestyle .
Career
Sandbech began snowboarding at the age of eight, in 2007 he took part in the beginners' contest of the “Arctic Challenge” - a competition on the TTR World Snowboard Tour . The organizer Terje Håkonsen described the then 13-year-old as the best young snowboarder. In the 2008/09 season he won his first victories at the World Snowboard Tour in slopestyle at the Protest World Rookie Fest in Livigno and on the halfpipe at the Evolver Tour in Kirkerud .
As the youngest Norwegian athlete since Sonja Henie in 1928, Sandbech represented Norway at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver at the age of 16 . He achieved 30th place on the halfpipe. In August 2010 he won gold in slopestyle at the 2010 Snowboard Junior World Championships . In 2010 he achieved fifth place in the halfpipe of the FIS World Cup on Kreischberg and second place in the Big Air Contest of the FIS World Cup in Great Britain. In 2011 he was able to achieve a placement among the top five in the World Cup in Great Britain. In the 2011/12 season he came third in slopestyle at the Burton New Zealand Open in Cardrona , in the big air competition at freestyle.ch 2011 in Zurich and at Air & Style 2011 in Beijing . At the Snowboard World Championships in Oslo in 2012 he finished 24th in slopestyle and 20th on the halfpipe. He finished the season in first place in the overall tour standings.
At the start of the following season, Sandbech took third place in slopestyle at the Burton High Fives . This was followed by further third places at Air & Style in Beijing and in slopestyle at the Winter Dew Tour in Breckenridge . At the 2013 Winter X Games , he won bronze in the Big Air competition . In March 2013 he came in second place in the Slopestyle in the FIS World Cup race in Špindlerův Mlýn . He finished the season in second place in the Big Air Tour ranking and second place in the Tour overall ranking.
In the 2013/14 season, Sandbech won in slopestyle at the Burton High Fives in Cardrona and the US Snowboarding Grand Prix and FIS World Cup races in Copper Mountain . He took second place in the big air competition at freestyle.ch and in slopestyle. at the Burton US Open in Vail . In January 2014 he won bronze at the Winter X Games 2014 in slopestyle and big air competition. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Russia , Sandbech won the silver medal in the first-ever slopestyle competition in February . At the end of March 2014 he won silver in big air and gold on the halfpipe at the Norwegian championships. At the end of the season he won the Tourlopestyle ranking and for the second time the Tour Overall ranking. He came fourth in the FIS Slopestyle overall ranking.
In the 2014/15 season he took second and first place at Air & Style in Beijing and Innsbruck . In January 2015 he won silver in slopestyle at the Winter X Games . A week later, he won in slopestyle at the 2015 Burton European Open in Laax . In February 2015 he came third in the Big Air at Air & Style in Los Angeles and thus came first in the Air & Style overall ranking. At the end of the season he was Norwegian champion in slopestyle. After finishing fifth at the beginning of the 2015/16 season at Air & Style in Beijing, he finished second in slopestyle at the Winter Dew Tour in Breckenridge . At the Winter X Games 2016 in Aspen , he finished seventh in the slopestyle and fifth in the big air competition. He came fourth at Air & Style in Innsbruck and 14th at the X-Games Oslo 2016 . At the 2016 Snowboard World Championships in Yabuli he won the bronze medal in slopestyle. In the 2016/17 season he finished fifth in Big Air and fourth in slopestyle at the 2017 Winter X Games and sixth in slopestyle at the Burton US Open. In March 2017 he won the silver medal in slopestyle at the X-Games Norway 2017 in Hafjell and the gold medal in big air at the Snowboard World Championships 2017 in Sierra Nevada . At the beginning of April 2017 he became Norwegian champion in slopestyle. In the following season he won second place in slopestyle at the Banana Open in Zhangjiakou and the Spring Battle in Flachauwinkl . At the Winter X Games 2018 he came 13th in Slopestyle and at the Olympic Winter Games 2018 in Pyeongchang he came 16th in Big Air and fourth in Slopestyle. In March 2018 he became Norwegian champion in slopestyle.
In the 2018/19 season, Sandbech won the Slopestyle at the Winter Dew Tour in Breckenridge and finished second at the World Cup in Laax . At the Winter X Games 2019 he came in 16th place and at the Snowboard World Championships 2019 in Park City he came in 58th place in slopestyle. In the following year he finished ninth in slopestyle at the Winter X Games 2020 and won the bronze medal in slopestyle at the X Games Norway 2020 in Hafjell . He also took third place in slopestyle on the Winter Dew Tour in Copper Mountain.
Since 2017, Ståle's life as a snowboarder can be followed on YouTube in his vlog , which is produced by the US filmmaker Spencer Whiting, known under the alias Gimbal God.
