Stockheim is the largest part of the municipality of Kreuzau in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The hamlet of Stepprath still belongs to Stockheim .

location

Stockheim is located on the border between the arable Zülpicher Börde and the Düren city forest and the Drover Heide, a gravel terrace mainly covered by forest and heather, which extends south from Düren to Thum. Niederau , Düren, Rommelsheim , Soller and Jakobwüllesheim and the Burgau Forest border directly on the town .

history

The place is a Franconian foundation, as the name derived from Stock = trunk suggests for the Rode place. The village was first mentioned as Stockum under the Cologne Archbishop Heribert (999-1031) .

Stepprath was called Step Roide in old trial files in 1527 . The manor district used to belong to the Burgau lordship .

As in neighboring Soller, there is evidence of a pottery industry in Stockheim in Roman times.

Stockheim was the cradle of open- cast lignite mining around Düren. The Eustachia underground mine on the outskirts was opened as early as 1825 . In 1866 a process was developed there for the first time to press briquettes into shape. The so-called salon briquettes were created .

Reorganizations

In 1814/15 Mairie Stockheim became the Prussian mayor . The administrative headquarters were moved to Kreuzau around 1880. In 1929 the Stockheim Office came to the Kreuzau Office. In the course of the local reorganization, which came into force on July 1, 1969, the communities except Niederau renounced their independence and merged to form the new Kreuzau community.

Attractions

In the adjacent forest right next to the old Panzerstraße is the "Thousand-year-old St. Mary's Oak". It is also known as the "ceiling boom" (thick tree), after which the local carnival club is named.

church

Old church in Stockheim

On a slight hill in the middle of the village are the old and - at right angles to it - today's parish church of St. Andreas from 1937. The old church now serves as a youth home and exhibition room. It is a two-aisled, essentially early Romanesque building, which was given a tower in the 16th century and a late Gothic choir was added.

The three main construction phases can be seen on the outside of the church: The lower row of small arched windows on the north side still belongs to the core structure, which is dendrochronologically dated around the year 1000 based on remains of wooden window frames . In the 12th century, the core building was raised by around 2 meters and provided with another row of arched windows. The aisle was added on its south side. In 1523 the church was expanded again: in the west with a three-story tower with a high, pointed helmet, in the east with the choir with its Gothic tracery windows. The interior , which had previously been flat, was given a ribbed vault and the arched windows were walled up. From 1752 to 1764 the church was given a baroque interior.

The old church was badly damaged during World War II . Since the restoration, the tower has only been covered by a flat tent roof; the largely destroyed vaults were replaced by a simple wooden ceiling and the small arched windows from the Romanesque construction phase were exposed again. The three restored baroque altars are now in the parish church of Weilerswist .

School, kindergarten

In Stockheim there is a three-group kindergarten (75 children) and a Catholic elementary school .

traffic

On the outskirts, the federal highway 56 runs from Düren via Zülpich to Bonn .

Landstrasse 327 connects Stockheim with Niederau and Jakobwüllesheim.

Buses on the following lines run through the town:

Next to the place on the edge of the forest, a former concrete road for tanks runs from Düren (former barracks site) to the nearby Drover Heide military training area .

Association

There are many associations in the village that play an important role in cultural life. These are the women's and mothers' community, a fire fighting group of the Kreuzau volunteer fire brigade with youth fire brigade , the drum corps , the carnival society , a Catholic youth group, the church choir , the May society , a Stockheim reservist comradeship , a local branch on the Rhine. Rural women's association, a cycling club , the rifle brotherhood , the gymnastics and sports club and the theater club as well as three citizens' initiatives .

economy

The largest commercial area in the municipality of Kreuzau is located on the northern outskirts. On the Stockheimer Landstrasse in Düren, an intermunicipal industrial area has been created on the former barracks site in recent years. However, the industrial park lies entirely in the area of the city of Düren. However, the operators are the city of Düren and the municipality of Kreuzau.

The Multi Packaging Solutions plant , formerly Wienstroth & Hammans, is located in the industrial area on Panzerstraße .
