Swetlana Howhannessi Nawassardjan ( Armenian Սվետլանա Հովհաննեսի Նավասարդյան , Russian Светлана Оганесовна Навасардян ; born October 29, 1946 in Alaverdi ) is a Soviet - Armenian pianist and university teacher .

Life

Navassardjan was the elder of the two daughters of the historian Howhannes Sergojewitsch Navassardjan (1914-1995) and the mathematician and soprano Granusch Howhannessi Petrosjan (1920-1990). At the age of five, Nawassardjan began to play the piano in the Romanos Melikjan School of Music in Alaverdi . At the age of 9 she gave her first concert with the 30 Inventions and Symphonies of Johann Sebastian Bach .

When Navasardyan was 12 years old, the family moved to Yerevan . There she continued her musical education for a year at the Sayat Nova Music School and then with Watsche Umr-Schat in the piano class of the Romanos Melikjan Music School. At the age of 14 she played the second part of Aram Chatschaturjan's piano concerto after only two days of rehearsal .

In 1964, Nawassardjan began studying at the Yerevan State Conservatory named after Komitas Vardapet in Watsche Umr-Shats class. In 1965 she won the 1st prize of the Transcaucasian Music Competition in Tbilisi , in 1966 the silver medal of the International Robert Schumann Competition for Piano and Voice in Zwickau and in 1968 the 4th prize of the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig . In 1966 she became a soloist with the Armenian State Philharmonic .

After completing his studies in Yerevan in 1968, Navasardjan studied at the Moscow Conservatory named after Tchaikovsky in the piano class with Jakow Israilewitsch Sak from the school of Heinrich Neuhaus, who died in 1964 . After graduating with honors followed postgraduate at the Moscow Conservatory with JI Sak (1971-1973). In 1972 she won the 5th prize (silver medal) at the Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth in Brussels . 1972–1974 she was an assistant at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1972 she became a soloist in the Gos Concert of the USSR .

In 1974 Nawassardjan returned to Yerevan and taught at the Yerevan Conservatory (from 1981 as a lecturer , in 1989 he was appointed professor ). In 1977 she won 2nd prize at the Sydney International Piano Competition .

From 1967 Nawassardjan made guest appearances in more than 40 countries, including the USA , Canada , Japan , France , Germany , Italy , United Kingdom , Spain , Austria , Belgium , Switzerland , Greece , Poland , Bulgaria , Argentina , Brazil , Venezuela , Cuba , Kuwait . She played in the Sydney Opera House , the Leipzig Gewandhaus , the Salle Gaveau in Paris , the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles and the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires . She played with many orchestras , such as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra , the Prague Symphony Orchestra and the Slovak Philharmonic . She worked with Yevgeny Fyodorowitsch Svetlanov , Valeri Abissalowitsch Gergiev , Vassily Sinaisky , Elisso Wirsaladze , Vladimir Teodorowitsch Spiwakow , Yuri Abramowitsch Bashmet and Viktor Viktorovich Tretyakov . Her repertoire includes works by Bach, Domenico Scarlatti , Mozart , Haydn , Beethoven , Schubert , Schumann , Brahms , Liszt , Tchaikovsky, Richard Strauss , Arensky , Glasunow , Rachmaninov , Debussy , Poulenc , Stravinsky , Hindemith , Prokofiev , Shostakovichatur , Bartok , , Shchedrin , Komitas, Arno Babadschanjan , Tigran Mansurjan and others. Nawassardjan led master classes and was visiting professor at the Damascus Conservatory (1992), at the University of Montreal (1993), in Japan (1996, 1998), at the Strasbourg Conservatory (2006), at the Liszt School of Music Weimar (2008), at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and others. It took part in many international music festivals ( Bratislava , Varna , Echternach , Paris, Tours , Venice , Moscow, St. Petersburg , Potsdam , Sapporo , Granada , Saloniki , Yerevan etc.). She was a jury member at the Transcaucasian Music Competition (1978, 1981), the Arno Babadschanjan Festival and competition for young pianists in Yerevan (1989, 2017, 2019), the International Pianist Competition in Tbilisi (1997), the International Franz- Liszt Competition for Young Pianists in Weimar (2009, 2014), and she was the jury president of the Aram Chatschaturjan Competition for Pianists (2011). In the winter of 1989 she also appeared as a conductor for the first time .

Navasardyan currently lives in Yerevan and Paris and continues her concert and teaching activities.

The opera singer Araksja Dawtjan was Navassardjan's cousin.
