Sympathy for Nothing is a metal band founded in Schwanenstadt / Upper Austria in 2006 .
history
The band was founded in 2006 by Klaus Schobesberger, Thomas Putz, Christian Danninger, Martin Wagner and Christina Stur. The latter left the band in June 2008 due to personal problems and was replaced by Richard Jakob Thallinger in October of the same year. The group was represented at MyVideo-Musicstar with the music video Roads to Rome and took 5th place in the final. Park Lane 7 , a well-known German rock band (including the German Rock and Pop Prize, 2nd place at the Animago Award 2006 and the John Lennon Talent Award ), came second with their music video for Mr. Perfect .
The band gave several concerts in Austria and Hungary.
In 2008 the Upper Austrians won the International Live Award , drummer Martin Wagner was awarded the title of Austria's Best Young Drummer in the same year . Her self-produced EP Living Shades , which contains four tracks, was received extremely positively by many Internet magazines such as Vampster , Terrorverlag and Stormbringer. By winning the International Live Award , Sympathy for Nothing got the chance to give concerts at the Danube Island Festival and the Upload Festival in Italy, among others. In addition, the band has already played in front of more than 8,000 spectators.
On May 1st, 2009 the group played with the supergroup Hail! (Band members of the bands Sepultura , Judas Priest , Iced Earth and Megadeth form the band) in the Vienna Prater . On August 14th of the same year, Sympathy for Nothing played with Norther , Equilibrium , Endstille and Mastic Scum . Six days later the band played at the Frequency Festival , with bands like Herbstrock , Kreisky , Volbeat , Rise Against , Peter Fox , AFI and Petsch Moser , among others .
In November, the band supported the German dark rock band End of Green , who played a concert in Vienna . The band took part in the Austrian Newcomer Contest 2010 , where the band could only win the voting. The debut album should be released in the course of 2010. In February 2010 the band signed their first record deal with Terrasound Records . In April 2011, Klaus Schobesberger announced that he would leave the band.
Due to several delays, the band was only able to start working on the new album in mid-2011. It will be released on April 13, 2012 and will be called A Taste of Light . Since the label has signed a contract with Hoanzl , the band's CD will be sold in Saturn and Media Markt throughout Austria .
On June 8, 2012, Sympathy for Nothing played on Nova Rock . The group performed with The Sorrow and Die Vamummtn on the “switch off now! -Stage” .
Band name
In an interview on BezirksTV in April 2009, the band revealed how they got their name: "The English word sympathy not only stands for sympathy , but also for pity , and the name fits our style of music."
Notoriety
With their second EP, called Living Shades , the group was able to achieve a high level of awareness in the underground scene in Austria , Switzerland and Germany , thanks in particular to their song Roads to Rome .
Thus Living Shades , their second self-recorded EP -after Look at These Days from the year 2008- by several online music magazines very well received. Vampster wrote about the CD: “The band describes their style of music as melodic rock or metal , which is incomprehensible due to the growls of guitarist Putz and the sometimes hard guitar riffs. The band plays a mix of Nu- and Melodic Death Metal . Otherwise the band does a very solid and decent job ... "
Metrostation , an American pop band who wrote the hit Shake It , commented on the Roads to Rome video and said it was produced excellently. Trace Cyrus also noticed that he particularly liked the mix of clean vocals and screaming.
Musikreviews.de wrote that the album was an Austrian sensation, which was kicking a fist behind the ears and it will be interesting to see how long it will take to hear the five Upper Austrians on the other side of Lake Constance.
Metal.de wrote that the demo was surprisingly professional and assigned the music style to Melodic Metal , whereby 4 songs would not be meaningful, but only suggest the existing potential.
On Metal-inside.de it is said that Living Shades would be one of the best digipacks that was ever presented on the homepage, because according to critics it contains great drawings, a great songbook and lyrics. Metal-inside describes the style of music as a mix of Seether and Bullet for My Valentine . The online magazine writes about the track listing that with 4 tracks the scope would be quite short, but it contains a lot of potential.

Sympathy for Nothing play melodic metalcore on their EPs , which is reinforced by the use of keyboards . The vocals are mostly clean, but screamings can also be found in all songs. The distribution of guttural vocals and clean vocals is unusual for popular metalcore ( Caliban , As I Lay Dying , Killswitch Engage ), which is why the music of the group is also classified as post-hardcore .
At the beginning of the career the group had a female lead singer with Christina Stur. This was unusual in the early days of metalcore and hardcore punk. In the meantime, bands with a front woman have also established themselves in the scene. Examples are Walls of Jericho , In This Moment, and Iwrestledabearonce .
Vampster describes the band's music as "a mix of Nu- and Melodic Death Metal ", whereby Sympathy for Nothing describes their style as "Melodic Metal Rock".
Texts
The lyrics are written by singer Richard, deal with the personal experiences of the band members and also contain socially critical topics (although the band does not see itself as political). The texts are written in English. ("The English language allows us to reach more people. Besides, we can't imagine the metal genre in German in this way, and we all agreed that we wanted to go in that direction.")

International Live Award
The International Live Award ( ILA ) is a newcomer band contest that has been held in Austria since 2007. Bands from 6 countries (in addition to Austria, Italy , Slovenia , the Czech Republic , Hungary and Slovakia ) take part in the contest. The winner will receive 14,000 euros in cash and several prizes worth over 100,000 euros.
Austria's Best Young Drummer
The Best Young Drummer of Austria contest is organized by Drumhouse at the Superdrumming Festival. The participants send in a video and a recording with their application. The videos are judged by a jury consisting of well-known musicians and drumhouse members. In 2008 Martin Wagner was named Best Young Drummer in the "Under 18" category.
Local Heroes
Local Heroes is a non-commercial music competition for newcomer bands that is held in Germany and Austria. In 2008 the band was a finalist in Local Heroes, but had to drop out of the competition due to the failure of a band member.
MyVideo MusicStar
MyVideo MusicStar is sponsored by MyVideo. The winner receives a record contract with the Starwatch Music label , which is managed by ProSiebenSat1 . The winner is the band that receives the most votes. The voting lasts 10 weeks, whereby a weekly winner is determined every week and the voting counter is then reset to "0". The band was one of the 10 finalists and took 5th place in the final with Roads to Rome .
