Telus Communications (Alberta) was founded in 1990 by the provincial government of Alberta with the aim of privatizing the state-owned company. In 1995, the municipal company Edmonton Telephones (Ed Tel) was taken over, making Telus the largest telecommunications company in the province. In 1996 the old brand names AGT and Edtel were removed from the market and the Telus brand was strengthened. 1999 saw the merger with BCTel (British Columbia Telephone). With the merger, the company developed into the second largest telecommunications provider with a 22% market share after Bell Canada which had a 42% market share. In 1999/2000 the takeover of ClearNet, a wireless operator, took place.

HSPA + upgrade

Telus signed an agreement with Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei to provide a parallel communications network that ran alongside the existing CDMA. The project began on November 5, 2009. The network, jointly built by Telus and Bell, is the largest HSPA + network in Canada, with a 93% population coverage. Telus and Bell share some transmission towers, but have separate networks. The HSPA + network allows download speeds of up to 21 Mbit / s and roaming in over 200 countries. On August 3, 2010, Telus was the first company in North America to receive approval to publish the upgrade measures that will allow the HSPA + network under construction to be expanded with new technologies. The HSPA + Dual Cell technology makes it possible to receive data at a speed of up to 42 Mbit / s. In February 2011 Telus began networks with HSPA + Dual Cell technology in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ft. Equip McMurray, Whistler, Camrose, Winnipeg and Toronto.
